I just purchased a '92 960 w/ 78K miles. Have owned several S90s and a 940SE. The steering wheel on this current '92 960 project is harder to turn than the others. Also the steering wheel has quite a bit of play to the left and to the right. This is more noticable on the highway.

What could be contributing to these two problems?

 

Try replacing the power steering fluid.
How is the tie rods condition? check the boots on the sterring parts.

If all checks out good, could be a worn gear in the rack. I think mine has some very very sligh play from center postion.

Wait for the experts to get on.
