1995 960 Fuel Pump Test?
According to my Volvo mechanic, my model (1995 960) has two relays...1 in the fuse panel inside the car and another in the engine bay. Since I don't hear any priming noise when I turn the key I'm hoping its a relay problem. However, I thought that if I could test to see if I'm getting current to the pump it would help me rule out what's wrong. If I have power at the pump the relays are fine and it's a pump issue.
Is there any way to test the pump prior to removing it from the tank? I can see the pump and a black tab with wires, but not sure how I should go about testing. I'm pretty good with most DIY's but electrical and voltage is not one of my strong points.

RE: 1995 960 Fuel Pump Test?
I can't find any reference to a second fuel pump relay in the engine bay or anywhere else. It would be interesting to find out which relay the mechanic means.
To test for power at the pump there should be a pink wire (positive) and a black (earth or ground). Use a voltmeter or test lamp across the two. Make sure that there is no fuel vapour about as a spark could solve all your problems.
If you have to remove the pump it is part of the tank unit which comprises the pump and the sender unit for the gauge. The pump can be separated from the unit so can be bought on its own. Thereshould bea large hose clip around the retaining nut for the unit which has to be removed to get to the nut. One word of warning about the retaining nut - If it is not replaced within about half a day after being removed it should be renewed or it will not fit and leakage will result. If you find you do need a new pump make sure you replace the seal on the tank opening and grease the tank unit contact face with a thin layer of petroleum jelly.
