Just joined forum as purchased a 960 today. Really happy with it so far! New member post here - https://volvoforums.com/forum/new-me...-member-81640/
Items I have ordered today to start:
-Timing Belt, Tensioners, water pump etc
-Brake Rotors 4 Corners
-Brake Pads 4 Corners
-Front Corner(One lens missing)
-Front Sway Bar End Links(Totally shot)
-Tailgate Shocks
It has some brand new generic tires but prefer Falken 912 for cruising all-season performance so going to put a set of them on there as well. Two trips to work the Roar Before the 24 and 24 Hour week! Getting it ready. Drove it home 1hr30min with no hiccups.
Questions for the small issues I have right off the bat. As well as some repair questions before I dive right in. I own 2 BMW E30 chumpcars and do most general maintenance myself but want to confirm some items.
1 - Brakes - Standard unbolt caliper, unbolt caliper bracket and remove rotor. Reverse procedure to reinstall. Same on a Volvo?
2 - Latch on the tail gate. It 'sticks'. So sometimes you close and it doesn't engage. Assume it needs lube and free up the mechanism. If that doesn't do it replace? Where does one get that part? Is the 'lock' part of it to replace as one?

You're probably correct about the lube for the tailgate, if it's not rusted, I can't see what could go wrong with it. As far as the brakes, maybe I'm lazy, but I have only changed one rotor on three Volvos combined and they have a combined 900K miles on them. I would definitely do the pads and they are very easy.
Since this is a used car, maybe someone "turned" the rotors which does more damage than good, and therefore you need new ones with the original thickness. Another word..... tighten the lug nuts only snug, then use a torque wrench so that 1) they are the correct torque, and 2) they are tightened evenly. Wrong or uneven torques on the lug nuts ruin the rotors.
Also, since you just got this car, buy the Robert Bentley Volvo manual.

I always torque wheels. My BMWs are 82lb/ft. What is the Volvo?
Definitely possible. I never turn rotors. I just do pads/rotors in a full set on used cars. I have pads I like personally and I know what I have installed. Peace of mind.

Hi,
I think the lug nut torque is 85 ft-lb, better to look it up to be sure. I was incorrect, the Bentley books are only for 200s. I must be getting old, I was thinking about Haynes, but Bentley is still the best book out there. About half of the things, like engine stuff are the same for 200s as 900s so Bentley is helpful. Suspension and axel stuff is much different. A Bentley book is good to have, but then you have to discern when it's description applies to your car. Might still be worth it since the book is so good.
