Default 94 960 will not turn over - advice?

I have a 94 960 with the 2.9L engine. I was trying to start it today & it was cranking, but didnt start right away. I let off the key & tried again, but now when I turn the key, nothing happens. I figure ether the starter is bad, or the starter relay is bad.

Any advice on which one is usually the culprit?

Was it cranking slow? If it was cranking, I doubt it is the starter. How old is the battery?

Battery is new. It was cranking normally until it stopped. Maybe its the neutral safety switch? Where is that located & how hard is it to replace?

It very well could be the neutral safety switch (PNP switch), try jiggling the gear selector, you can also try this, with foot firmly on brake pedal, turn ignition on to release the gear selector and row it back and forth about 30 times thru the whole range of motion, PRNDL. Then try starting it. If this works then you will need to be replacing the PNP switch located on the side of the transmission near the exhaust down pipe. Really all it will need is to be cleaned of dried grease cooked by the exhaust pipe and regreased, easy to do and saves about $125 for the part.

OK got it to start. Runs like crap. I believe I have a bad MAF sensor. How do I get codes from a '94 960? How do I erase them?

So was it the PNP switch?

If you think you have a bad maf, it is easy to find out, with the ignition off, disconnect it, if it runs better after a few seconds then it may very well be a bad maf, it could also be just oxidation on the connector. Make all of your connections with the ignition off, the maf can be destroyed otherwise.

A leaking intake manifold gasket could also be the cause of a bad idle. Does it run above idle well?

It backfired so hard it blew the screen out of the MAF, thats why I think its bad. It runs the same with it disconnected. I will try to check the codes today if I can figure it out.

It has had the head off because the timing belt broke, so all the valves were replaced, so the gaskets are all new.

Since it backfired so violently, maybe the timing is not correct?

To read the codes, here are instructions on another site: Engine and OBD Diagnostic Codes

No I had a couple coils wired incorrectly. I changed them & it starts now, just runs bad. I figured since it blew out the screen, it probably damage the MAF too. Im gonna check the codes today.
