'96 960 FUEL ODOR (fumes) INSIDE

Fuel Smell
The fuel rail is probably the culprit, once started the fuel pressure increases and there was a flaw in the forward end of fuel rail and it starts misting the engine compartment then spraying. The fix is a newer version of the fuel rail and different bolts. Replace the o-rings too. Get some extra bolts I dropped a few into the netherland. It doesn't look like the new retrofit will work but it does. I guess the engineers are smarter than they look.

Since you mention "exhaust leaks" I will share my solution for an extreme condition of an interior polution smell of burnt oil. The problem was solved when I replaced the oil filler cap with one that had a gasket which had not hardened to the point of no longer sealing. The gradually leaking oil was running down the back of the engine and turning into smoke.

PLEASE HELP ... looking for suggestions OR advice from others w/ experience
We recently purchased a 960 model and initially the car hadn't exhibited fuel fumes (odor) inside the car - while driving.
However, after fueling the vehicle there was an obvious GAS smell, fuel odor the previous owner ONLY advised prior to purchase the heater was non-op and suggested heater core replacement. The vehicle doesn't have any exterior LEAKS or apparent exhaust leaks.
Any suggestions? Please SHARE your experience OR suggestions THANK YOU in advance!
