Last night, driving home from thanksgiving, my car jerked (like it changed gears, kinda) then the check engine light came on and the temp went from cold straight up to the exact middle in half a second.

Got it home and parked it. Started it this morning and it started, but the rpms struggled to stay at 600 then just dropped and the car turned off. Tried a gain and tried hitting the gas to keep the RPM's up, but it seemed like that just made them drop faster.

Any thoughts?

FYI battery is brand new.

 

Since the engine light came on while running I would first check for stored fault codes. There might be an important clue here.

I wonder if you lost fuel pressure?
