2002 S40 Engine Starts, but Quicly Dies
Hey All,
I have a 2002 S40 and it has never given me any problems until recently. This afternoon the car started, but it quickly died. I am able to start it everytime, but it quickly dies. I am even able to reverese or drive forward for a quick second, but it then dies, and the steering wheel locks up. I changed the oil about three weeks ago, and put in a new battery last weekend. Also, because of the change of battery, the code went on, and haven't been able to drive with any music for about a week. I was wondering if anyone had any clues on what I should do

The music part is easy. You just need to re enter your anti theft code. It is a 4 digit code that should be in your owners manual on a credit card sized card. When you disconnected the battery it resets the radio. Just punch in the code using the preset buttons and you'll be all set. The other problem sounds like it might be fuel related. Have the fuel pump checked.

I have a early '04 S40 and I had the same problem. It was as if the engine could not hold the RPMs at 1500 when the engine was cold. A few times I had to drive with one foot on the gas to hold up the RPMs and the other foot on the brake to hold down the speed. But the car would idle properly after the car was warm AND after I shut it off for a few minutes. More than a week later, there was a check engine light. The OBD-II meter suggested it was a problem with the MAP sensor. A SnapOn meter said the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor PSI was reading in the 20s instead of the 40s. I found the sensor mounted on the top of the inter-cooler above the center of the radiator. I replaced the sensor with one from the Volvo dealer and the problem when away.
