Default 960 Transmission Woes: What To Do?

My '93 960 has about 240,000 miles on it and the transmission is starting to go. My question is whether or not it might be worth either having it rebuilt or switching it out, assuming one can be fund from a used parts supplier. I'm wondering if anyone on here has any experience with either of these options. This is not the PNP switch issue. This is a dying transmission. I'm just trying to find opinions on whether or not to have the transmission rebuilt or switched out or giving up on this otherwise nice ride of a car.

I've had trans issues w/ other vehicles, and I would say, If you can afford it, take it to a transmission shop and have it rebuilt. Its worth it in my opinion. Haven't done it yet cause I think (if you bring the trans in) you can spend $1-2k. Still worth it since that should give you 100-200k miles.

depends. Are you doing the install or paying a shop? Have you done a fluid drain fill? if not, drain the fluid through some filter paper to see if you see any debris (ie clutch remnants) or if its clean. measure what you drain out and refill. Note this will only get like 60% of the fluid so you may want to repeat 2-3 times to get mostly clean. Reason for this is a tranny can fail different ways, and the shifting symptoms may give you a clue as to what's needed. Any debris or burnt smelling / black fluid suggests the clutch packs are shot and the tranny needs to come out for a rebuild or replace. Hard shifting can be caused by worn/failing solenoids - which on some models can be replaced with the transmission still in the car. Go to a euro-car friendly transmission shop not a dealer - most dealers are not interested in rebuilding or installing a replacement (they will be happy to quote you $6K for a new transmission). Not sure what your specific car has for a transmission possibly an AW70 which is an Aisin transmission that's also used by Toyota and other cars so a tranny shop should be able to work on it.
