Code P1617 on '96 960 Volvo
Anyone ever deal with a P1617 code on a '96 960 wagon. Wife shut it down, came out & cranks over OK & everything else appears to be OK. Fuses OK, getting ready to check all power wiring & relays. Like an idoit, I cleared the code before writing down the description of the code.
Thanks, Brad

It's always adviseable to erase the code when it first appears. If code persists, then troubleshooting should begin. Anyways, code description is:
"P1617 Cable fault between AW 30-40 TCM and Motronic 4.4 ECM (lamp lights)"
It looks like the first signs of ignition switch failure. Ease and cheap to replace when times comes.

Thanks,
Found some info on another site earlier after searching, pointing in the direction of the trans connectors & grounds. Going over various connectors, found the 3 connectors on the side of the trans, the front one was badly corroded due to the heater flow control valve leaking, directly onto it. Re-did connector, still no start.
I'll look into the ignition switch.
Thanks for the input, Brad S.

Well Henry10, you nailed the P1617 code with the ignition switch failure. I found a rear-ended '96 960 sedan in the junkyard, got the ignition switch, the charcoal driver side sun visor & RT front side marker light also, all for $17.25 (half off day). Now I just need to find a LT rear taillight lens.
The fuel system relay was also bad & fuel pump died. I'm still not understanding all of it, but the 960 runs great again.
If anyone tries to be cheap on a replacement fuel pump (I was as $ is non-existent at the moment), don't get the Airtex E8186. It's smaller in diameter & nothing was listed about a retro-fit kit. I ended up getting one from Napa (Bosch)

It is fuse #5 under the hood and it is a 10A labeled AC-relay emiss. syst relais ac syst emiss. If i remove the fuse the starter does not stay running. The fuse will blow if i keep it in but when i use the toggle switch for the starter I can use the AC. Just not sure what direction to go right now.
