Default Lock Switch and seats

Brand new to the volvo world (1996 960 wagon), so apologies if these are common issues and fixes...

THe doors will unlock with the switch, but not lock. I can lock them all using the key. Does this sound like a switch problem?

The driver seat back will move, but not the seat. The motor runs, but nothing happens. The passenger seat doesn't move at all, and no motor runs either? Any ideas of what is wrong?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum,

Not sure about your seats and locks.

I want to make sure you know about the timing belt. These are interference engines, meaning that if the belt breaks very bad things will happen to your valves and pistons.

On your year 965 I don't know the interval for timing belt replacement. My 1997 965, Volvo recommends changing it out at 70,000 miles.

If you don't know about the last time it was changed I would have it done ASAP.

Also STRONGLY, consider changing the water pump and tensioner when you have the belt changed.

Good Luck

The locks should work with the switch. Do you have a remote? Be careful, this is the 1st Volvo that I know of that is easy to lock youself out. Count your blessings that it will not lock.

As for the seats. The passenger seat has a stop button. If that button is pushed, the seat will not move at all. As for the drivers seat, it is likely that you have something locked in the tracks or the cables are bad. There is a write up in the S90 section that explains about the seat cables.

Not sure why the S90 section isn't the 960/S90 section. They have more in common than anything else.

Thanks for the info.

The timing belt is being changed tomorrow. I have a feeling it was done at 80,000 miles, but I'm not sure, so I'm just gonna get it done.

I'll look into the seats. I have a remote, but it doesn't work. I haven't had time to replace the batteries yet, so I'm hoping that's all it needs. By locking out, do you mean the key won't open the door form the outside if locked?

Thanks again.
derek

No, I mean that you can lock the keys in rather easily. Other Volvo's that I have had were not that way. I have locked myself out of my 960's 4 or more times over the past 5 years. Once running, 3 times not. It sucks.

Default Remote

1997 960 Wagon

A couple of years ago, I lost use of my keyless entry. Both remotes did nothing, changed batteries, checked fuses all good. Everything worked except the remote.

Maybe I am inventing the wheel again but, I came across this tidbit, and it worked. Apparently you have to reprogram the receiver module. This is done by:

1.Turning the key to position I or II five (5) times in ten (10) seconds.
2. Then leaving the ignition on (not started) Press either LOCK or UNLOCK on the REMOTE within thirty (30) seconds.

3. Turn ignition off.

It worked for me, I was truly amazed!!!

I hope this helps.
