misfire code on a 960

i have a 1996 960 with 63,000 miles that has a P0301 cylinder 1 misfire detected code. i changed plugs, also swapped coils. got any clues? anything i can check? what next? thanks

Check wiring.
Do a compression test.

i found that the intake manifold gasket was bad between the number 1 and 2 cylinder ...replaced intake manifold gasket. brilliant!
