Default Newbie needs B230FT Engine

Hello, Great web site! This is my first Volvo, but I have worked on both my neighbors 740/760 for a few years now. I always admired them and found a deal I couldn't pass on.

I just bought an immaculate '86 760 Turbo Wagon with 149K. The first owner shows all dealer maintance until 146K. Second owner seized the engine at 149K. I have access to a low mileage B230F(non turbo) engine. This car is too nice to jerk around with the wrong engine, but could I use the non turbo engine with the turbo and accessories? What are the differences between them?

Assuming the B230F is not acceptable as a replacement. What are my options for a used engine? I understand the B230FT was used up till 95 in the 940 and that the 93-95 were stronger assemblies. Are they interchangable with the 86 accessories?

Any help would be great. This car looks like a 3 or 4 year old car! It must have been garaged. Head liner is still perfect, leather is not cracked! I wan't to make the engine 100% again and drive it.

Thanks
Jake

I would swap the turbo head onto the nonturbo engine and drop it in. But thats just me.

Then you can look for the proper motor with low milage.

I found a 92 940 Turbo sedan with 120K that I can get for $500. I was thinking of swapping the engine trans and trans as one unit, but I am thinking of taking your advice and swapping the turbo head to the 90 N/A motor. I mean I already own it and would only need the headset gaskets and a return line for the oil to the turbo. My concern is the condition of the turbo head. The best I can tell is the last owner lost the coolant (maybe head gasket failure) and over heated it till it seized. So the turbo head maybe damaged. I guess I will need to pull it to be sure. Are there part that should be changed noe when I have the engine out, like the t-belt, tensioner, water pump, etc?

I would change the belts and waterpump, thermostat and stuff like that to be safe.

I just remembered something make sure the N/A block has a removable plug for the turbo return line.
