OBD2 Scanner for 1996-1998 Volvo 960
I'm looking for a good scan tool for my 960 Volvo. I want one that can do more than just turn off the warning lights. I want it to tell me which cylinder that's not firing and why. Which relay or sensor is not working. I bought an Innova and it is just short of useless. I realize that the 96-98 cars don't have the same brain as the newer cars but is does have an ECU and there should be a OBD scanner like the dealers had back then. My son has a Vida Dice and lap top setup that is not compatible and there are so many out there that claim to work on the 960's that are no better suited to Volvo's than the one I have. Not scared to pay a pretty penny but I want a unit that can read engine, transmission and other codes besides basics and emissions. Any and all recommendations appreciated.

A compatible scan tool can give live data from your sensors, but it will usually be up to you to determine if the data is not correct.
OBDII is capable of much more info for OBDI
Someone correct me if my memory is failing -----
Hoonk,
I appreciate that you responded to my inquiry about a good scanner for the older Volvo 960's. I bought an Ancel VOD700 which was advertised to be for Volvo's from 1996 and up. And after talking to other Volvo folks their of the same mind that the 960's were not going to give any scan tool very much information. I like the 960 wagons and thought that the OBD would give me more info than the earlier winker box. The VOD700 is somewhat better than the Innova but evidently the older ECU's and sensor system is pretty basic. Would the model MK-808S that was mentioned be an upgrade from the Ancel VOD700 or about the same. My first Volvo was a 59' 544. I then got a 64 Sport and drove it a long time, several 122S models 144s and 240s as well. Another favorite was a 1981 240 wagon with cloth interior. Did not care for the 740 that much. I could do my own repairs on the older cars but the computerized stuff gives me fits. Most of my Volvo's rusted out after many many miles.
Thank You
Bob
