Rear suspension,a nd gearing questions
OK, so I think I want to begin gathering data for an LS1 swap on either my current 960, or another one if I decide to on another chassis.
1st off, there was a suspension change for '95. What changed in the rear end? There seems to be significantly more aftermarket suspension parts available for the pre-'95 cars.
Also, rear end gearing. Do any other rear diff's fit the '960? Are any of the ring & pinions interchangeable? And was there every a factory limited slip unit that would work in this car? If I swap in an ls1 thats making 350+ to the wheels, a limited slip could be very, very useful

The sedans went to IRS. The wagons kept the live axle. If you like the car, just yank all the IRS out and grab an axle from a wagon. The standard axles in late 740's and almost all 940's were often the 1041 which has a G80 locker already. The back of the driver side axle tube has a white label which when uncovered will tell you the ratio as well. 1040 is open, 1041 is a locker. Use spray brake cleaner to remove the dirt and undercoating. If you use carb cleaner it will wipe the print off the label! If you plan on driving the V8 in traffic you might want to consider the 3.31 axle. My 740 came w/ a 4.10 open diff and w/ a V8 I really needed a 6th gear. Swapped in a 3.31 Still plenty of go for the road. Stock rear ends are good for 400whp. Choices are 3.31, 3.73(most all turbo cars)4.10. Volvo also made a 3.91 but I've never seen it past 87 or so. All of the ring and pinions swap as long as you do the set. May need to re-shim. Frankly, it is simpler to swap an entire axle assembly.
My '95 wagon is also IRS. So you're saying the pre-95's were solid axle? And there's no chance in hell of me switching from an obviously superior IRS setup to a live axle, lol. My stock gearing is a 3.73. Just curious if any of those lsd units were available in the IRS cars, or if they'll swap into my irs diff housing (if the R&P's are usually the same, I'm guessing it will).
I wasn't aware the wagons went to IRS in 95 but quite obviously they did. I do know that the axle on my V8 is from a 94 945 so that would be in line with what you're saying. Try researching the swap at turbobricks.com TB'rs have pretty much doneevery swap imaginable and there's lots of good info there. No sense re-inventing the wheel. Of course, you might just have your opinion of IRS revised somewhat.
Thanks, I'll take a look around there I guess. I'm keeping IRS though, there's no possible way a solid axle can be made to handle as well as a proper IRS setup
Keep in mind, I'm an avid autoxer, and this'll probably see Road Atlanta at least once in it's life.

I know this is an old thread but I was hoping to get some help in identifying my axle. The white tag reads:
4.10 NR1216367
FABR.NR. 109231
Of course this means it's ratio is 4.10, but how do I know if it has a limited slip? There's no reference to 1040/1041. The car is a '91 base wagon automatic. Thanks for any help!
