We were used car shopping for my hub when we ran across a 1996 960. Body in pretty good condition, but the integrated engine was shot. He said no, because it would be very expensive to replace that kind of engine. I unfortunately am very taken with the car, and the price is low. Does anyone have an idea what engine replacement costs, with either a used or rebuilt engine? And is it worth it?

Can you tell us the engine that is in the car now? If it's a four cylinder, they're quite cheap in the wrecking yards. If it's a six cylinder, move on.
It also depends on what is wrong with the engine, it may be a fairly easy fix.
Also, a really nice used Volvo will sell for $2k or less, so make sure it's worth the effort.

 

IMO, those I-6's are kinda hard to come by. If the t-belt broke it messed up a lot of valves but may be worth fixing. I have seen a lot of them for 3k and less.

I purchased one with a bad water pump for $500. The interior was like new but it did need a paint job and some other maintenance. When I got done with it 2 weeks later I was into it for $1,100. A decent paint job would have cost about $750 so for less than $2,000 that was a great deal. I did do the work myself.

The most I would pay for a 960 with a bad motor is $250.

 

I agree about the I-6. Also they don't suffer lack of maintenance well, so a used one is a big gamble in my opinion. The turbo four is tough as nails and readily available.
Did you guys get 960's with the turbo four over there?
