Rebuilt, right down to the mains, my 96 NA last november and my 96 T5, also right down to the mains, last month. The motors are different, the T5 being a superior motor.
I bought the NA with 136K on it and it never burned oil. Odometer broke at 168k just after I took a job 75 miles from home. I did the commute for a year, serviced at expected intervals, and the car started burning big time oil.
Bought the really abused T5 with broken(like most of the car) odometer 126k but it was leaking oil everywhere.
Differences in the motors... The T5 has piston cooling jets that spray oil under the pistons, the NA does not. The T5's bores measured like a dream. I had to do it about 5 times just to convince myself. IMO the jets make a huge difference it how the motors wear. But from what I've seen it's not about wear it's about cooling the cylinder walls so they don't get distorted by the high loads and rpm.

Are you guys listening? Have you stuck a bore gauge down the cylinders of a 200+K NA? or a T5? (or is it just wheeels you're interested in, wheels are inexpensive, rebuilding an engine is not)I have and there is a big difference. Now I have to do the NA over because I didn't trust the gauge(I did at first but rationalized it away due to the lack of ring ridge, bad choice). The gauge didn't lie, wish I had a vid of the measurements. Again...Big difference. Other than the engine the cars seem the same except for trim levels.
BTW ...took my 96 platinum t5 (totally rebuilt engine, turbo, suspension, steering, tires and a few others) out for a nice windows down, sunroof open drive today. Just like a brand new car. I absolutely love the stock Sachs suspension, Volvo picked the perfect combination of performance and comfort. I also put Goodyear eagle GT 205/55VR16's on after hours of reading tire reviews...they are the *****. Quiet and responsive, can't say anything about wear yet but 50K warranty tread life is not bad.

I don't get to full lock too often, if fact I avoid it as I think about those nice new and tight CV joints. But I did have to crank the wheel on Sun. morning to do a quick u turn and yeah hopefully that was all I heard. You might think about a strut and shock replacement. Man... my car is like a dream with just the stock Sachs (really reasonable at FCP). Anyway so far I'm loving the eagle GT's.
