Default 1993 Volvo 850 lamps

I have a 1993 850. The night lumination of the rear fog light, sunroof, rear defogger and seat warmers is not showing. I popped the sunroof toggle out and looked at it. It doesn't seem to have a place to replace a burned out bulb.

Has anyone taken this apart and found a bulb that can be replaced?

I replaced mine in the '94 with Radio Shack part number 272-1092 bulbs. They solder in and the entire switch must be disassembled to do it.

Lee, is anything going to fall out of the switches when I take them apart (such as springs on the moonroof switch)?

Litehwk, yes, that was the first thing I checked, however, I didn't think it would be that, as all the switches work properly, just are not illuminated when the lights are on.

I did all the switches on mine 94 last week. All the illuminations were dead on ALL the switches including heatd seats, cig. lighter and shifter backlight.

I bought same radioshack blbs and replaced in all the switches in about 1 hr starting from A to Z.
When you open the switch, a small contact strip is the only part that goes off loose. I just had a big sheet of paper spread onthe table i was working on and it was fairly easy to understand how it will go back in again. The only TIP is that you replace the bulb and half assemble the switch and and keep it on the table and put the top part on itin that position. This way the contact lever will stay upright and the chances of dislocating it will be minimised.

Springs and contacts will fall out as the switch comes apart. Bestharry has the plan, use something fairly large to contain all of the parts.

You wind up with something that looks like this but it really isn't that difficult to put them back together.

Here is a detail on where the lamps solder in:

Yes, it seems to be a common problem on older Volvos. I replaced the bulbs with the Radio shack bulbs two years ago.

This might be some useful info:

When I went to buy the bulbs from a electronic components shop here in Toronto (becuz radioshack know as The Source didn't had more then 2 in stock) i found a part number for 14v instead of 12v. So I bought the 14v and expect a little better life as compared to 12 volt ones. Although the price comparison is 12v= $0.44 and 14v=$1.89.

I want to thank everyone for their input. I purchased the Radio Shack bulbs (part number 272-1092 that Lee had suggested). However, rather than put them in myself, I went to a local electronics repair place here. He disassembled the switchs and soldered the bulbs in place, all for $20.00 total.

The headlight switch I opt'ed to replace, as my car was made for Canada and I didn't like the headlights being on in the daylight. The new switch (cost from dealer around $50) has a small screw that allows you to chose between daylight running or not.

The rest, rear fog light, sunroof, rear defogger and the two seat warmer switches, the bulbs were replaced with the Radio Shack bulbs. Everything is nicely lite up now.

Thanks again.
