i recently replace the front struts, the spring seat and the sway bars, tie rod end. also the two middle bushings. the car has a very strange sound on the left drivers side in the front suspension. everytime it goes to a bad road it make a laud sound like it has no suspension in that side. i have check the ball joint they are good. i would like to know if it can be the strut mount that is bad. any feedback would be appreciated thanks

 

There is a 99% chance it is the spring seats. Pop the hood and look at the upside down castellated nut and see if it moves up and down. If it does the spring seat is shot. It is customary to replace both of them at once since you will need an alignment anyway.

I just bought 4 XC90 spring seats to put on 2 of my850's that have the same problem. I have not yet installed them as I am waiting on additional parts but they are supposed to be much stronger and they are only about $10.00 more.

EDIT: I missed that you installed new spring seats. [sm=oopssign.gif]. The strut mounts could be bad but check your sway bar endlinks. They are a high failure rate item and they will make noise as they go bad.

so the XC9's spring seats are tougher?!

i worked at a volvo dealership in parts and all the spring seats are the same for a lot..A LOT of vovlos..so i dont recall them being any diff. than 850's or s40 or anything liek that..but i willmake a phone call to see if i am right or ust made a fool of myself

 

Let us know what you have found out. I have heard the XC90 ones are supposedly stronger also.

The 850,S70,V70,XC70,S60,S80 are all the same. 2000-2004 S40 are different.

 

Sorry the XC90 is also the same.

 

thanks for you feedback i have decide to check the struts to see if it may be the spring seat. anyways i have bougtht both parts spring seat and sprin mount.

 

ozark lee, U mention the castellated nut . If it moves, are u refering to if u bounce the car up and down? also I see a 1/2 space between the nut and the strut assembly, is that normal. I have a 850 turbo and the problem I am haveng is this. I changed the 2 front strut with monroe sens-trac. But I notice the ride is very hard. I took the struts out and check it and they are fine, they don`t seem stiff to give me that kind of ride. Also, I too hear a knocking noise on the left side when going over bumps. It drive me crazy. I checked what I could but nothing.
