Yeah, plug and play. You can tell by the number on the ECU I'm pretty sure. I just don't remember what the "sequence" is that signifies that it's the R ecu.

check ipd's ecu upgrade packages on ipdusa.com, they have a list of the possible upgrades with the ecu part number. that might help.

That's a 072 ECU, and according to IPD that´s for a T5, not a T5R or an R.

Maybe the different codes only indicate the type of software it has from factory. It might be possible to flash a T5 ECU with R software.

IPD does not map to R software. IPD remaps the ECU, drops the fuel cut off and raises the boost, they map to their specs. Just call them, they know what works with what.

I doubt anyone reflashed an ECU to R specs. That would be really pointless and a waste of money to flash an ECU to be marginally better than stock when you could get one flashed by IPD or something. I've never even heard of anyone getting an "R Tune".

Chances are it's an R ECU. I've never heard/read of someone being sold an R ECU and it wasn't that. Most people that even know what an R ecu is and that it's pretty highly desired wouldn't lie about it.

going by wat IPD has its just a plain turbo which is wat i have and dont want, i want a stock R ECU, aswell i'm sure because its so hard to say, to some its just o yea its an R ECU and they believe it, but i myself know there r codes to fidn out if its legit and so thats wat i'm trying to do here ASWELL i think i'll tel u price he wants for it, 60$ CAD

That is a turbo ECU and not a R one.
If someone chipped it you will see on the case where they opened it up to solder in the new chip.

Hello, I do have the same ECU bought in used condition.
The serial number you may see in the picture attached.

Is this ECU for 1996-97 T5 or 1996-97 R model?

thanks

Default ECU Types.

The T-5R and R will end in 628 is the 240 Hp HPT. The 072 (most common '96-'97) is the 225 Hp HPT.
Sorry to revive an old thread, but I recently purchased a '98 XC, LPT of course.

I had recently purchased a '98 LPT XC AWD and will be running through it in the spring. A 3" N/A intake manifold which works well on my '96 Turbo Wagon with the "628 R" ECU.

'98 Is Monotronic 4.4 and has a different designation for the HPT T5. 240Hp.

I have found a scrap '98 T5 and have the ECU already, which I believe is Monotronic 4.4.
I do not have the number handy to post but will add to this thread, or start a new one if there is interest.

I will be grabbing the 16t Turbo from the same car tomorrow. With exhaust manifold hopefully.

I will visit this site more. I do stop by often, but do not sign in.
I want to share what I have learned from the four Volvo cars I now am in possession of.
