1996 850R ECC Defroster selector not working
I need a little help with my ECC Selector switch. Here are the symptoms:
1. With engine running both the Rec and AC lights blink and then shut off.
2. The fan seems to work o.k. In Auto mode it runs on high when the temp control is turned all of the way up or down and goes to a lower setting around the mid-way position. The slider function also varies the speed of the fan.
3. Turning the center selector switch has absolutely no effect. The air comes out through the two center vents only -- nothing out of the driver's or passenger's side vents, floor vent or defrost vent no matter what the position of the selector.
I don't have a code reader or access to one.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? I tried searching for this topic, but couldn't find anything related.
Thanks,
Tom

does the AC and heat come on/off with the temp selection? You should check with a local Autozone or buy a code reader online to get a definitive diagnostic, anything else would be an educated guess. My guess is you either have a fault code with one or more of the vent "door" damper motors or a temp sensor problem. There's something like 5 motors that control the blend doors for heat/AC and floor/defrost/dash vent flows that are controlled by the ECC computer.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, since the heater core is always active, it would blow heat, if the selector worked properly; but, since the doors (or baffles) won't open, I can't get heat into the car.
I would love to get a code reader, but 1, I don't know which one to get, and 2, I am on Social Security and really can't afford the extra $100.00 or more that it would take to buy one.
I have read that the lever the motor operates to change from defrost to floor vent is easily broken, preventing the change of air direction, but I wanted to ask on the forum before I start taking the dash apart. Also, what would cause the driver's and passenger's side vents to not function?
Thanks,
Tom

you may want to call a local Autozone etc to see if they will read codes for free. You should be able to get at the blend door motors from the sides of the center console and by removing the back of the glove box. I don't think you'd be close to the airbag in the dash but to be safe, disconnect the battery prior to working. FYI, EEUROPARTS.COM has blend door motors on "sale" - $160 a pop for OEM Volvo so if you need a replacement, you may be in for a trip to your local Pick-a-part...
