Default 1997 850 Trip Computer

Hi, my first post (). Anyway, I have a 1997 855 2.5L Volvo 855 with a VDO Cluster and a clock, no temp (base model)

Recently my odometer stopped counting and as I searched online, I found that some clusters have the Trip computer on them, I then got a really good deal on a whole cluster + the info button but I am not sure if it will fit. It has the updated info switch, rounder design, but I am not sure about the connections.

Then I found out a Volvo 855 TDI cluster with the switch and everything that I think it fits, but I donīt know if the trip computer is going to fit a gasoline version.

If you are referring to the LED section, it can be removed from the old cluster and may fit on the new. Another solution is to fix the odometer and keep you old cluster. My thought would be to drop in the new one, see how it works (before buttoning up the dash). Fixing the odometer is pretty straight forward - there are two plastic gears - the larger one usually loses a tooth and needs to be replaces. FCP or eBay sell a repair kit for $10 or so. If you've never removed an instrument cluster before, there are seven or so screws holding down the left side of the dash (assuming you have a left hand drive) - you need to pop out the vents to find a couple of em. You then prop up the far left side (the right side from the airbags/glove box stays put) and you can bend the dash cover to the point the left side reaches the glass. You will then be able to undo the top clips, reach behind to find the top connectors and pull up/out a bit until you can find the bottom connectors. With the unit out, you can remove all the brass torx screws on the unit and the front plastic will separate. You then want to mark the gauge needles since you will pull them off and remove the plate to access the odometer. When you finally remove the odometer you will find the two small gears - replace and reassemble making sure the needles are set right. You should probably also replace all the bulbs for the cluster to save the trouble later. And no funny business with rolling back the odometer !! (your ECU knows the score). There are some pretty complete write ups on the web ie http:// http://www.odometergears.com/documen...ear_Repair.pdf

It should take about 60-90 minutes to do this for the first time, less once you know the tricks.

Hi Jaime!

What you pictured here (the one with the grey back), can not come from a Diesel. It indicates RPM up to 7000 - no diesel would ever like to turn that high…

Generally VDO instruments indicate RPM to 7.000
YAZAKI instruments indicate RPM to 8.000
Diesel (VDO) indicate max RPM 5.000

And, what is far more important: the cluster seems to come from an early model (pre OBD2) and thus you wonīt be able to couple it with your 1997!

Go find a different one, good chance!
Alex
