RE: 1997 volvo 850 console light
I have to do the same thing on my 98 V70. From what I've seen, you need to pull the ashtray and unplug the seat warmers. Remove the parking brake trim. In the armrest there is a cover plate that needs to be removed that provides access to some bolts to take out. I think after that it is a matter of sliding the whole trim piece back and up. Please let me know how it goes!

I don't have the link handy, but I remember the directions were once on matthewsvolvosite.com. You might need to search a bit but it is there. When I did mine, all I had to do was remove the ashtray screws, and a couple on the rear of the console, then the whole thing thilted up to get at the bulb.
As for the bulb, you can get the one from the dealer for about $20, or one from Radio Shack for about $3

You'll have one or two consoles, I can't remember which... Here's the link for the first one.
http://volvospeed.com/Repair/SV70console.php
And if it's the older one, you'll have a total of 6 screws to remove, not two. You'll find the other four underneatht the little coin tray under the ashtray. Pry it up and you'll figure it out from there.

Hey Maxbaby,
Thanks for the link. Im looking at it now and Ill tackle it tomorrow after I pick up the flex hoses for the front.
Seems thatTheAnvilis turning intoa never ending repair $$$ experience.
Ive still got to repair/replace a front left ABS sensor, fix a fairly serious pull to the right under hard braking - have already replaced both front calipers - heater core, got that coolant odour in the cabin, seat heater element for the drivers side (and replace the switch as the light in it is out).
Whew , I got some work ahead of me.
Anyways, one job at a time. Maybe two this week. Brakes and center console.
I'm just hoping that the lights are an out and in thing.
Autoxray was able to get me the lights for the dash trip computer
and Im hoping that one of the left overs will work/fit. If not, Ill post a photo of what I might need and see where that takes me.
Back in a bit.

Quick Brick,
Ever consider that the pull to the right might be suspension related? Ball Joints and tie rod ends have caused pulling under braking in my Volkswagens before. Check the tire wear. Also check the brake pad wear to verify right side is grabbing more.

Hello 1996850turbo,
You know? Im beginning to think the same thing. Ive got to go and pick up the flex lines anyway as I have changed the rotors once, pads and now both calipers so why not the lines?
I have booked some time in the shop because Im really getting tired of this and I dont need to be looking for the Snowy Rhubarb in a dark ditch because of this.
Im also looking for a replacement ABS sensor (want the ABS/TRACS to work)and think that I have found one and Im just mailing them for an E.T.A. and to my door cost.
Ill let you know how it goes.
