Default 5 speed barely any speed!

Please help 93 volvo 850 196,000 miles new fuel filter plugs wires and fuels system flush still no better. engine has throttle response in neutral but going up hill or trying to pass car lags speed goes from 55 in 4th gear down to 40 even if i put pedal to the floor it only goes as fast as it wants

like 850tony said, clogged air filter or wrong ign. timing..double check plug wires make sure they are in the correct order.did you gap the plugs to .028?

timing maybe. maybe even a bad CAS (cam angle sensor)

new air cleaner and plugs were gapped correctly and not cat where is the cam angle position sensor?

What happens if you shift down? Does it rev up? Also when you said that it comes down to lower speed under load, how does the RPM behave. They come down or they stay at same - just making sure that its not your clutch that slips at higher loads.

Had this happen on a yamaha motorcycle and an MGB,,and both times it was the brakes,,the brakes would heat up to the point that the brake cylinders heat up and expand the fluid so the brakes actually come on on their own...the motorcycle actually caught on fire from it.. the MG,,the rear brakes stopped working so the front brakes were doing all the work and overheating....could be a pad is cockeyed if its too worn also....Rog

Engine in first second and third almost redlines without reaching the speed the manual says is optimal 1st says 25mph I can't even get 10mph berfore I hit 4000 rpm second I can only reach 25mph before hitting 4000 rpm book says 40 mph 3rd tops out at 40, 60 out of 5th and 75mph out of 6th

**** in my manual i usually shift like so:

1st gear - 35mph
2nd gear - 60mph
3rd gear - 80mph
4th gear - ???
5th gear - ???
