Volvo does not show an awd transmission for a 1996 850 in EUR/International or Norway parts catalog - How about more details on year, model, engine and trans?

The reason the driveshaft is missing is something expensive went bad and it cost too much to fix given the value of the car.

+1 - the 850 AWD was introduced as a 97 model year but the early cars were build in 96. It should be the same AWD as the 98 V70s. As hoonk noted, usually the reason for removing the rear prop shaft is a failed bevel gear which is more costly to repair than the value of the car (even if you can find a used part). You should be able to search for 97 part number or guess that its the same as the 98s.

Lucky dog; That's a cool car. I guess I'm glad that i don't have to find a prop shaft for it, but it's certainly worth fixing.

If your angle gear and driveshaft are missing - they were removed because the cost to fix them was close to the value of the car.

a good reference for replacement parts is car-part.com (a national recycle yard data base). Considering the 850 AWD went to Canada but not to the US, you may try Canadian sites or look for 98+ V70s to see what's out there but its probably not a lot :-(

There were several different prop shafts fitted between 1997 and 2000

I think they'd all be automatics, where 850 AWD's are all manual (aren't they?) But the driveshaft could have been the same and I guess probably is.

At the risk of scaring everybody, prop shafts are easy to make if you have the ends. The ends certainly look familiar, but you'd have to be sure they're actually compatible. They may be compatible with much later and much longer Haldex driveshafts. Anyway, good luck.

P.S. I wrecked my S70 T5 Manual, and I am currently fishing around for 98-00 parts cars. It seems like there are a lot of AWD available right now. I am trying to hold back as the car that is closest to me is really too nice to kill. Of course, at this late date, it may already be deleted. If I buy it I'll let you know what I see under there.
