Default 850 Exhaust

This is my first time posting. Looking for some help regarding my 1995 Volvo 850 Exhaust. I need a new Muffler because it was basically falling off. Anyway I brought it to the mechanic by my house out of desperation.
They Quoted me at $1200 for new Exhaust system. I am not too good with cars, he said the front parts ahead of the muffler was all rotted out and needed to be replaced. He also said the Volvo exhaust comes in two pieces and I needed both.
Any suggestions on what to do? Where to buy a new system at the best price?
Its a non-turbo 850

Current state: No muffler, very loud. At least its no longer threatening to fall off and hit some poor car behind me.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

My plans was to puchase a car with a bad motor and take the exhaust from it, then scrap the car. You can also find an exhaust chop shop. We have one there that sells exhaust parts all day long and welds them to your car. Takes them 10 minutes and you're out of there for $125 to $400.

What he (RSPI) said. They quoted you a "stock" replacement.

If you wanted to spend the money you can get a complete aftermarket stainless steel performance system for under 500 without a catalytic converter but would fit manifold to tailpipe.

Do you have the ability to install it yourself or do you need a shop to do it for you? If you're going to have to take it to a shop you need to call around and price it as you can surely get a shop to do it for a better price with aftermarket parts not necessarily made for your car. You can get a better system, better pipe, more performance, less price and it would still be quiet if you chose to but almost always a smaller muffler compared to that bathtub of a thing Volvo puts under there as a stock muffler.

My 850 turbo: first picture stock downpipe with cat, second stock muffler. Third is my OBX system that I purchased for around 400.

I honestly have never seen a "rotted out" front section of these late model exhausts. The factory pieces are high quality steel tubing. But you may be in the northen states and I guess it is possable. Get a second opinion on the front section (down pipe, cat, intermidiate tube.) If all that stuff is actually fine and not leaking, don't mess with it.

The muffler section. I suggest you buy a $40 turbo style muffler at a parts place and have a shop install it for you. You do not have to use the OEM style muffler After market mufflers just need a little tubing and a creative way of hanging it. In most cases the factory hangers suffice.

Thanks, I will just try and find a muffler and have a shop throw it on. I don're care about the performance so much, i just need it to not sound like a truck when im flying down the highway. Right now its pretty loud and stinky. Oh, and I do live in Minnesota, the winters here destroy cars' underside.

I got my obx turbo back exhaust for $402 shipped. That pretty much eliminates any exhaust issues you might have...and it took me and a buddy all of about 3 hours to install it, and that was with liberal beer breaks, smoke breaks, no lift, and no power or air tools.

This has been a great car so far. Its just winter in Minnesota is quite rough on the underside of cars.
