Default 850 mufflers

hey, im deciding on buying a new muffler, i dont really have enuf for a full cat-back, just wondering, if i replace the muffler, it will only change the sound right? literally, no performance gains? My volvo is 850glt (non turbo) 1993 model.

and, what type of muffler do i need, im looking at universal fits. but i dont know the OD and ID numbers for my existing pipe. will it be bad if i purchase a muffler that has a ID bigger/smaller than my existing pipe?

I'm looking at HKS, Apexi, Tanabe, etc. mufflers on ebay, if any1 can provide a link of which one will work and provide me with my OD/ID problem then that will be greatly appreciated.

And if i purchase a muffler, where do I take it to get it on? Are they always this cheap, I see like brand name mufflers going for like $60-100 shipped on ebay? Will it be welded? Like will a local muffler shop do it? How much does it usually cost?

"Universal fit to all straight exit muffler" -- is that what I have?

Thanks.

It might cost you a little extra to have it installed on your car by a muffler shop.Your muffler on your car is very big. They will have to make pipes to have it fit on your car.The muffler on your car is very odd.It is like almost 2 ft long and the pipes the attach to it are at weird positions. If you buy one and have to have a muffler shop install it they can adapt it to the size you need.I check out all the sites I know and could not come up with any more info.

I replaced mine with a flowmaster 50 series muffler, You will need a mandrel J-bend and two 90 degree bends. the rest of the bends are pretty small so any shop should be able to make them with out crushing the pipe. I used 2.5" pipe. Mileage went up haven't had a chance to dyno it yet.
