Hello,

I am new to this forum and I just bought a '96 850R Black Wagon with 175K miles for a very fair price. It has a lot of little dents, runs a little rough and has stupid purplish tints. I plan on "restoring" it.

Before I put any time or money into it, I wanted to know if this was normal. When I drive it flat out, floor it, the turbo will "cut out" after a few seconds, but if I keep the boost needle right at the end it takes off like a rocket if the tires don't smoke. Is that normal? I don't know much about turbos, except they can be stupidly fast.

Also, when I accelerate from a stand still, it's kind of rough, unnecessary vibrations. Could this be fixed by a good tuneup and flushing the transmission?

Very interested in what you guys have to say.

Check the turbo vacuum lines one might be broke and you might be over boosting.

 

I would check all vacuum lines to the turbo, if your flooring it and the turbo is cutting out, you may be hitting fuel cut.

 

Where exactly do I look? do I have to take that "cover" off the turbo, it's hard to get a good look at the turbo. Maybe from underneath?

and, what kind of spark plugs, spark plug wires are best for an 850 R, by best I mean good performance and reasonable cost.

If these are too standard of questions is there an archive or list of common questions. I don't want to beat a dead horse, just looking for advice.

For the hoses on the side of the air box is the turbo boost control valve. Follow those hoses to the turbo.

For the Ignition stuff go OEM. Bougicord for the wires,Bosch for the cap and rotor. OEM plugs unless you are going to run High boost. If running higher boost Autolite Coppers work awesome gapped at like 0.26 to 0.28

 

Just check all the vacuum lines running between the turbo, engine, boost solenoid, etc. They tend to get cracked and old. For plugs, go with factory, and for wires, Volvo or Bougicord (they make the OEM wires, so while they cost a little less, they're identical to the OEMs. Or, if you're on a budget, Bosch is okay, but the price isn't that much less, so I'd stick with Bougicord. (FCPgroton is a good place for these items.) If I were you, I'd check out the "resources" thread, and do a "stage 0," (details are in that thread) so that you know where everything stands with your car.

I'd add a fuel filter to that kit if you've got more than 100,000 miles. I can almost guarantee no one ever changed it on your car. It's the easiest fuel filter in the world to change.

 

+1 on the fuel filter. I change mine every 30K.

 

I need to change the fuel filter on my 94 850 turbo too...I read about it in a haynes and it said something about relieving the pressure before pulling it..and some special tool..?? Is there really a procedure to this...? I am new to Volvos and also turbos...go easy haha Oh and a tune up made a HUGE difference on my car.

What about exhaust? I don't want it to sound like a rice-burner, I want it to be throaty and roar, but not too loud. Any suggestions? Within reason, $200-400.

This 850R really puts a smile on my face, I really can't believe it when I gas it up around 40-45 mph and the tires break free, it's too much fun.

That's awesome. Is the "R" that much faster than the regular 850? I just bought mine and have the same questions about mufflers..would like something throaty but not raspy.

Yes they are fun now that mine is a manual tranny I had it chirp in 3rd gear taking off easy and getting on it after rolling. I am running 14 PSI boost as well.

 

There is a valve on the end of the fuel rail like a tire valve. You can push the center in and bleed the pressure off up there.

 

can anyone recommend a good aftermarket exhaust system that sounds throaty, not like a cheesy rice-burner. Now it just has exhaust leaks, sounds awful.
