Default 850 roof molding - ideas?

The black molding along the sides of the roof line are coming apart on my wagon. It is chrome-looking underneath. I was wanting the fix this. Does anyone have any ideas? I thought about peeling it off and painting it black. I also thought about painting it with some rubber stuff, like a paint-on bedliner. I think it may wear better, but it may be a pain to do it without it looking sloppy. Or maybe somewhere there is a way to order a new piece to put on...I'm not sure.
Anybody have any ideas or experience with redoing/restoring this?

Thanks

Casmith

I need to do mine also, I saw a thread/sticky somewhere on how to do this. Does anyone remember seeing it. How do you get the trim off (tech, anybody)?

Starting at the windshield carefully pull it straight up, it's just clipped in. Careful around the fender but it will come out from under it.

My idea won't work, I was thinking of using black heat shrink tubing. I'm going to try black striping tape but paint might work too.

The absolute best thing you can do is find a 98-99 V70 and get the strips from that. They fit perfectly and will not peel and they have the little trough on the drivers side so rain does not come in your side window when you have your windows cracked during the rain or even when you wash your windows. I have S70 strips on both my 850's.

This is a little project that has recently been added to my ToDo list. I've read that a lot of people have used electrical tape for a quick fix, but it fails quickly, too. My plan is to pull it off, sand it down a bit and paint it with a rubberized paint. Duplicolor, 3M and a few others have a rubberized undercoat spray that I'm interested in. I just need to see if they spray on smooth or textured.

Several people painting them have talked about masking them off on the car. They are super easy to remove and that would make painting them much easier. For some reason I don't think the black tape idea is that good.

I did pretty much exactly what the original poster said: I took mine off, stripped them down to the bare metal, then scuffed them with a scotchbrite pad, masked off the rubber molding on the sides, and painted them with bedliner.

The easiest way to get the black stuff off that I found was a box knife blade. I just moved it back and forth over the areas that still had black on them and worked it off. Masking and painting was easy, and I'm VERY happy with the outcome.

Thanks for the input. I will probably check Pull-a-Part, and if they don't have a V70 with a decent pair, I will tape it off and paint it with the bedliner. I think that will last longer than just about anything.

Thanks

How'd they look with the bedliner spray? Does it have a mat finish? If it does, what brand did you use?

Jim, are you kidding me??? I really HATE my trim that allows the rain to come into my side windows from the windshield. And my S70 has the best ones. Do the S70 trim pieces really fit, if so, I will order some for my 850 as soon as I get paid next week.

The finish product is 100% dependent on the prepwork you do. I made sure i had ALL the old black stuff off of them, plus I scotchbrighted them. Yhen I masked them off very carefully so I wouldnt get any on the rubber molding thats on them. That step is kinda a pain in the ****, since they are so long. Just make sure that you mask them off perfectly.

I just priced the parts for my S70 and they cost $161.90 each. My stealer is the highest I know of so they should be cheaper anywhere else. My Volvo yard said $25 a piece.

Just fine a used car and get them off of it. I have them on both my 850's. Now I don't have to put my windows up to do my window washers and they don't peel and they seem to stay black much better too.

I got a pair of the S70 rails from our Volvo Yard and they fit great. They are better because they have deflectors along the windshield to direct the rain over the car instead of inside the windows when wet.
