Default 850, T, T5 ?????

I'm finally going to take the Volvo Wagon plung!!!!!! I have decided that the 850 is the wagon I will be buying. I do not know all the 850 diferences. What is a T, T5. My guess is the T is a 4 cyl. and the T5 is a 5 cy. Are all the options the same between these three? Besides the power diff is anyone better than the other? Besides the normal maintence (timming belt, water pump etc.) Are there any common issuses I should check for?

If you got this far thanks for your time!!!!!!!!

All the 850's are five cylinder. Basically the T or T5 are turbo cars. In 95 they came out with a T5R that was the top of the line. In 96 and 97 they called it just an R and the regular turbo model from 94 and 95 became known as the T5. The turbo engine is 2.3 litre with 220 HP. The R is the same engine with a different chip and gets 240 HP.

Volvo made some lower end 850's also that are not turbocharged. They come in several packages like the GLE. They also made a real base model with clothe seats and hub caps with no sunroof. Personally I would not buy one unless it is at least a turbo. In 98 the 850 became the V70 (wagon) and S70 (Sedan) which is still pretty much the same car as the 850 with slightly different lines.

In my signature you will see a 98 Burgundy V70 with the low pressure turbo (190 HP) and my 97 850 R which has been torn apart in my garage since Thanksgiving. I HOPE to have it back on the road this coming weekend.

Hope this helps.

If you are shopping on autotrader, cars.com, ebay, etc

You can determine model by VIN
http://vin.stronghold.com/Lookup.aspx

55 - 850, 850 GLT - B5254S - 2.4L 10.5:1 non-turbo
56 - 850 GLT - B5254T - 2.4L 9.0:1 Low-Pressure-Turbo (LPT) TD04-13G at 7 psi
57 - 850 Turbo, 850 T5 - B5234T - 2.3L 8.5:1 High-Pressure-Turbo (HPT) TD04-15G at 10 psi
58 - 850 T5R, 850 R - B5234T5 - 2.3L 8.5:1 High-Pressure-Turbo (HPT) TD04-15G at 10-12 psi

Figure at least $5,000 and no more than $8,000, and at 8k it has to be imaculant and low mileage. Unless you are looking at the R, where you will pay some more. I paid $6500 for mine in June and it has 140K on it. I also bought the wheels and tires for another $1000. I probably paid a little too much, especially considering the problems I have had lately. You have to be patient and shop. I looked to about two months, but I would not buy anything except an R. I was replacing a 94 850 Turbo that was a great car, but for some reason the motor went at 206K. Might have something to do with my heavy foot and three kids learing to drive on it.

Here's a picture of the wagon:
