Default 850 turbo speaker replacement

My speakers on my Volvo 850 turbo are no good and I want to replace them. I went to Best Buy (probably not the best place to go) and they were extremely expensive. $400 just for labor. Thay said they had to bypass the factory amp? I'm fairly handy and want to try replacing them myself. Is it hard? Can I just replace the same size speakers with the factory ones?
Thanks

Good evening,

I believe you can replace the speakers with anything, as long as they fit in their nests securely and the input impedance matches (should be stamped on the back of the speakers with Ω symbol). I don't think you need to bypass the amp. $400 just for labour is ridiculous.

Good luck,

It should be a very easy and straight forward install and best buy is not the best place to get speakers. I hear those are supposed to stink.

I suggest you check out this forum's audio section (never been on it) or the one over at volvo Speed and they could point you in the direction of some good speakers.

Do you want to replace the front speakers or all of them?

I would like to replace ALL of them.. maybe not the tweeters up front, it seems hard to get to. I just noticed today that the back 6x9's (i think thats the size) don't work..

Oh, and speaking of the 6x9's. Does anyone know if 6x9's would be easier to replace or 5x7's?

^I'd go w/ 6x9s if the stock housing is for 6x9s...

I'm no audio expert (in fact, i know next to nothing about audio), but common sense tells me there might be some fitment problems if you go small...I'm not sure a smaller speaker would fit in the housing.

But check out Volvo Speed's audio forum. They probably know more..

I take it this is a sedan? If so I can help you out.

1. Dash speakers are 3", Front doors and rear doors are 5 1/4" and rear deck are 6x9's. It will be very hard to find an aftermarket 6x9 that actually fits the Volvo factory area.

2. When I did audio upgrades on my 1995 850 NA I went with 5x7's in the rear deck. Worked perfectly. Then I upgraded to a 5x7" component set with seperate 1" tweeters that I mounted right next to the 6x9" speaker housing.

3. To get to the dash speakers all you have to do is remove the grille over the speaker. Pretty easy to do. Just lightly pry it up.

Are you saying I should go with some 5x7's? Easier install?
