Default Aaron's 1994 T5 sedan thread

Tonight I picked up my "new" 1994 turbo sedan.

It is white on black/tan

Runs great and drives nice. The alignment is PERFECT.

The body and interior are damn near immaculate. Some minor wear on the driver's seat.

Issues at hand.

---Under full throttle, the car cuts out. It runs perfectly under normal driving. Ideas? Could it be a vacuum leak? That was my first idea.

---The odometer stopped working at 147,000 and some change, so a new gear is in order. How can I get the actual mileage from the computer?

--Needs the rear wing reattached.

--Front passenger side strut mount makes noise

--Brakes probably need to have the pads replaced and the rotors resurfaced.

--A/C does not work. I don't even hear the compressor kick on at all. So, I'll try and dump freon in tomorrow.

-- On the INFO screen when you go to the screen with the trip count, the mileage continuously counts up without stopping. You can reset it but it does the same thing.

--Assorted interior lights are burned out

I'm sure it will need all new fluids as well.

The owner said they purchased it for their son two years ago, but he didn't like the car, so they rarely drove it. The gas might be bad as well, so I'll run this tank down and put some cleaner in it.

Any thoughts to help me get it stable and boosting properly?

I'll be doing a timing belt soon too because he didn't know when it was done last. I will pull the cover tomorrow. I just need it ready before November so I can stow the Celica away for the winter.

I paid $1,300 for this car. CarFax only had a few records and was clean, save for the broken odometer.

Pics to follow.

Nice find indeed. There's a thread in the sticky's with step by step to fix the broken odometer as well as get the actual mileage, I just did that last weekend on my 94 turbo and it works. And the other things that are with it don't seem too bad, no major jobs I don't think.

Maybe a tune up for the WOT running problem. Are the ignition wires original?

Looks like I spoke too soon!

Today I went to CarQuest in town to get some freon and new license plate nuts.

When I came out, the car's lights would come on but it wouldn't crank over.

I let it sit for a few minutes and it started. I bought a new battery and it will crank all the time.

But NOW, the car will run for a few seconds and then stall out.

Fuel delivery problem?

It appears to have a newer radiator and coolant flush.

I did find the fuel pump cover laying in the trunk today though

Well, the car is worth it in parts I would suspect.

I just want to get this figured out. Its SOOO clean inside and out other than needing a wash/wax and vacuum inside.

Help me!

And yeah the plug cables are original. I figured it needed a tune up, but we'll see.

Thoughts?

Maybe the fuel pump went bad check for power to the pump when you are cranking. If you have power then check for fuel at the rail.

I will check the pump and rail.

What If I have power at both?

One of my friends seems to think its a vac issue.

I plan on replacing the vacuum hoses completely.

Will a pump and fuel rail work from a 98 S70 non turbo? There's one at the yard that might be worth getting

Or can I just get one of the $50 ebay pumps and call it a day?

Actually sometimes the car won't even crank. When you try to start it there is no cranking or anything.

Starter too?

Try tapping the start with a hammer.

if it starts after you tapped it then it is probably bad.

could be a bad FPR. like tech said, a tune should solve most problems.

Fuel pump only will work from the S70.
Maybe the starter is bad or the PNP switch is bad.

I put new plugs in it today.

I still need the cables, cap, and rotor.

I pulled back the timing cover today and the belt needs to be replaced.

What should I do first, the belt? or get the car to be able to drive and then do the belt?

I don't need the car to be drivable until it starts to snow, so I have a while and can slowly work on it.

Where is the starter located? I cannot seem to find it.

Also, what's the PNP switch? Where is it?

Are the FPR's and fuel pumps the same on 850 N/A's as they are the turbo models?

I may try to get the FPR and pump from a car at a yard to see if it helps the problem

not sure if they are the same or not....
turbo might have a higher flowing pump.

The PNP is like the neutral safety switch(Park position switch), attached to the gear level or it is on the trans, i dont rememmber....

Tech can help.

I think the PnP Switch is on the top part of the trans. You have to take the battery and the battery tray out to get acess to it.

The fuel pump will be the same but the FPR is most likely different.

Yes the PNP switch is on the top of the tranny. But first make sure there is power going to the small wire on the starter when it will not start. If you have power there it is the starter that is bad. If you have no power it is the PNP switch.

Cool

Are the starter and alternator the same too?

Also what should I do first? The running and starting issue or the timing belt?

Alternator and starter different things. Starter turns the motor over. Alternator keeps the battery charged.

If the timing belt looks really bad then I would change it first.

Oh no I know they are different, but there's one at a local yard on an 850 that looks like brand new.

The timing belt I think is original.

Is there a write up for it? I've never done one before
