Default ABS / Speedometer Issues

Hey,

We talked about this in my other thread a bit, but this might be a big enough issue to get its own topic.

I bought this car recently non running, fixed the timing belt issue, and now it runs. The speedometer does not work, nor does the in dash computer. For a while it did, and the mpg calculator, speedometer, and digital trip meter worked, then it went out again.

The odometer does not work either, but I think that is a separate issue.

Anyways, folks here told me to look towards the ABS module. Here is what I found:

Before I removed the ABS module:

And finally this. This is on the front of the engine, and one of the wires from the mess near the abs modules runs to this.

Anyways, I am stumped. The purple and green wire seem to be cut off, not going to the ABS, and go to some sort of relay. Any insight to this would be great.

I hope someone has been in there and can give you some insight. I'm a little lost and all I can say is wow. All that needs is a couple wire nuts to be a "trailer park" trailer hitch wiring job.

Always know I'm in for an adventure when I get under a vehicle or into a boat and see wire nuts on the butchered wiring harness

Might be worth a try if you can contact the previous owner to see if he can give you some insight to the "modified" wiring, when, who, what they tried to cure ??

Hey folks,

Well I followed this tutorial:

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...+module+repair

Decided to try it. It was VERY nerve wracking. Not for the faint of heart. I also re-did the hack job that the PO had done. I left his wiring, but I went ahead and soldered all his joint instead of using the twist-it-forget-it method and then used heat shrink over it to keep water out and prevent it from shoring.

Not sure which fix was the one that did it- but the important thing is it now works. I have my speedo and the digital trip counter.

NOTE: The odometer and mechanical trip meter do not work as of now, that is a different fix.

Just wanted to share my findings. Hope this helps someone else out in the future.

Do you have ABS functioning or was it a work around to bypass the system and get the ABS light to go out ??

That looks awfull...

Looks to me like one of the previous owners needed the vehicle speed signal to trigger something, however I have no idea what, the signal is a pulse type signal...
Any other "gadgets" in the car which were not stock? Some aditional instruments maybe?
