Default Another project :-) - HEADLINER

Well, I left a couple of videos for TECH and JPN those guys seem to be the most active Technicians on the site, but anyone that has done this stuff before can feel free to jump right in...:-)

I am waiting on an ignition component, and some other little odds and ends...hood latch, and breather hose...etc.

So while I wait I am lookin at my headliner and decide to do something about it...Ive read some posts where people have done this kind of thing before ...So I start taking out my headliner, keep in mind it is cold here and I really want to get this done before winter sets in. But, it is only a headliner so I could really go without but don't wanna.

I have all the 'grab handles' out, the lights are out center hanging and visors hanging...how do I get the center visor retainers out? I didn't see a screw.

Thanks in advance for everyones patience and guidance.

Some pics so you can see WHY!

The clips need to come out. You kind of pull and turn they come out on a little bit of an angle.
You also need to remove the A,B.C pillars and the rear hatshelf carpet panel. It is a little time consuming.
I pulled mine about 1.5 months ago because I had to replace sunroof assembly.
You cannot remove the C pillar panels will teh carpet panel is out from by the back window. That is also a pain to get out.

Also you need to remove the ring inside the headliner if you have a sunroof. It is the trim ring by the headliner. Be warned it will most likely shatter into about 10 pieces.

Mine is still out because I still have to buy the material to do it but cannot afford it since out of work.(Boy they look ugly without it)
Also if you have ECC you need to remove the temp sensor covers by where the front grab handles were.

Today I'll set my objectives at ABC and the sunvisor clips, and perhaps the 'ring'. Since I get off work at 1230 Ill likely start on it around 1 ...I guess the saving grace is how it will look in the end...this is gonna be some work!!!

When you do the moon roof liner, I would strongly recommend spray type adhesive by Loctite. I first used Scotch brand and in 3 days the liner was dangling again. The Loctite version never failed until I parted with my 850 and left the States.

Alright, headliner is out, and ready to go, I think I'll get the fabric cut and lay it in place for tomorrows install. Here is a question for the experts...Should I stretch the material just a bit or just lay it in place with no extra tension?

Here are a couple of photos to show you this part of my project!

All ready to go for the new fabric...

Make sure you buy the material with the foam attached to it.
I would lay it down tight then cut after it is glued down. Thats how I am going to do it.

Alright JPN...I went with your recommendation, plenty of folks said use the 90 by 3M but you specifically said use the loctite...so here goes...I know you paid specific attention to how cold it get here :-). Seriously we all put our lives in loctites hands everyday when we drive our cars so I am sure this stuff will perform. I'll snap some pics when I get the HLiner done. Believe me I am gonna follow directions to the T...

This is the right stuff?

Tech, from what I understand you can use any material you want! You don't have to use the 'foam' backed stuff. The trick is to remove all the old spray on foam padding from the headliner, if you do it and get all the old foam off the adhesive will stick nicely to the fabric and give a 'professional' look to any fabric. The foam backed stuff is necessary if you don't take all the old foam off, so as to cover the imperfections.

JPN recommended the LOCTITE adhesive, between the glue, and the fabric which is a little 'thicker' than stock so it will make a slightly warmer, and cozier feel and provide some sound insulation the cost is <$15 so we will see how it goes...I'll update with some pics... maybe even have it in my Volvo tomorrow!!!

The reason I say to use the foam backed stuff is because if you put even the slightest but extra of glue on it will bleed through the material and look like crap.

I am going to use the foam stuff.

Alright, whatever you do don't be offended. My learning has been through the internet, so we will see how it goes! If I have to redo it ...it won't be the first thing I've done that has gone awry! But in retrospect I have some some pretty intricate headliners...I got my fabric rough cut tonight....so tomorrow it is on with the glue and we will see how it turns out...really time will tell, but tomorrow we should have some indication as to how the headliner will look once I put it in Friday. I want to let it set up for at least a day, plus Friday it is going to get a little warmer :-)

Hopefully this LOCTITE stuff holds up :-)

No im not offended I was just trying to give my best opinion and best info I can.
I have tried a few repairs with fairly thin fabric and had it come through and look really crappy.

I am going to get the fabric here from I think it is joanns I think it was for $7.00 a yard which I think is pretty cheap.

I just like trying to do things once and not have to do them over again.

No problem...the fabric I used was somewhat thicker than stock, almost like a microfleece. I'll grab some pics. I have $8.23 In Material...and like $7 for the Glue...I coluld have got the 3M for like $12 but JPN said the loctite held better. I'll be straight up wihen it is done as to how it looks ...and give my opinion as to weather or not I should have uised the headliner material...I'll let you know! If I have to do it again, it won't be because I reinstalled it and let it fail. I won't hesitate to remove the bad fabric and go get the Headliner material...

I saw that one after the fact! One of the reviews of the stuff I used was exactly the same thing except...1 it comes in a smaller can and 2 doesn't say headliner on the can...but that stuff is sticky! I guess we see, my headliner is ready to go in!!! I think Ill let the glue set up for a little while it has only been about an hour...then I'll attempt to get it in tonight! We will see how it goes.

For some reason I coudln't get this site to work yesterday? But I did get the headliner 'done' well pretty close, I still have to do a repair to my 'ring'. and install my A posts. Also I am noticing a 'sound' coming from the 'right upper A post area, kind of like a motor...I will investigate this further.

Anyway, here are two pics before...

AFTER...

And here are a few pics of the install itself...

I will get the interior completed today, I also have a 'stuck' horn, so I have to fix that one too. Thanks to everyone, I will update this as I progress with my ride. But thanks to you guys this headliner LOOKS 1000% better. Not sure about the adhesive I used but from what I read it should be fine. If not I'll redo it :-).

Cost for the headliner <$16
