Default Another thread about Fuel smell

WHat is involved in replacing or inspecting the Vent hose on top of the fuel tank? I know i can check it from the fuel pump hole in the trunk, and everything looks good, but something from around the tank is causing the smell. Therefore i am planning on lowering the tank and im pretty sure i have to lower it to replace that hose.

Is it as simple as unbolting the straps and slowly lowering the tank? I belive i would have to disconnect the fuel pump connectors. How about the delivery and return lines? Would i need to disconnect those as well? Is this somethign i can do by myself without help?

Thanks.

You need to disconnect the plugs and lines to the fuel pump/tank.
Then open the filler neck door. Look for a little ring on the edge where it meets the body. Remove the ring and push the filler neck into the quarter panel.

Then drop the tank.

BTW I have to do the same thing on my car.

Are you getting fumes as well? I found out that my vapor canister was busted. I replaced it but still the same. I will check the rest of the fuel lines tomorrow before dropping the tank in the future when I get time.

I had the same thing happen to me. Ended up having to replace the fuel neck filler as it had a crack.

bringing this back from the dead, I had a chance today to put the car on the lift and indeed there is a pattern on the back of the tank suggesting that fuel had leaked out from on top of the tank.I believe it is the vent hose like Mr Tech mentioned. I will be taking back to my friends shop this weekend to take down the tank.

Now the vent hose is suppose to be small on one side and big on the other right? Can i replace it witha regular hose, or maybe even make one? Or do i need the right hose from the dealer?

Thanks
Ali

Hi Ali,

I hope this time the problem decides to disappear for good.

As for any fuel system hose, I wouldn't use just any rubber, I would use one that is designed for gasoline-use. Try dealer and if they want a fortune, you might want to try a hardware store to see if they carry gasoline-safe hoses.

P.S: Tech seems unable to come here for a while.
