Default Drivers Side Door

This is on the 97 850 R. Having problems with my drivers side front door. When the window goes down it will not go all the way and makes a loud clunking sound when it gets as far down as it will go. It's still up about 2 inches. Then sometimes when I unlock it with the remote or the key, when I pull the outside handle to open the door, it locks on me. If I unlock and try again it will lock again. I have had to open the rear door and reach up to the front door inside to get the driver's door open. I guess I need to take the door panel off and see what's going on in there.

It sounds to me like the connecting rod going from the outside door handle to the latch has popped off. The problem with the window is caused by the rod getting in the way of the windows operating range. That is the first thing I would suspect.

The window problem is most likely the window guide broke where it mounts to the door.

The lock problem might be in the lock itself. One of the Arms isn't releasing all the way.

I finally got around to taking the door panel off. I reached down inside and this is what I found. I'm really not sure what I'm looking at, but I think it's the window guide, and I'm not sure how to put in a new one?

That's the window guide Tech talked about. The tab on mine broke and was flopping around like yours. Instead of paying $26 for a new one, I drilled a hole in the remaining tab and guide and reconnected it with a screw. Worked perfectly for me and cost me nothing (but the small screw of thousands in my garage) - AB

Mine looks way too bent up to reuse. It's $24 at the dealer, so that's not bad. Also need the little light on the back side of the door. It broke when theguide broke. So that's another $20. If I can fix something myself and spend less than $50, I'm ok with that. Probably would be over $100 if somebody else did it.

All done and it works like new. About $40 and about 45 minutes of time total.

Since I always use the clicker to lock and unlock the door I didn't notice that the key will not work on the drivers door since I replaced the guide. My wife's been driving this car and doesn't have a clicker for it. So she told me about it and sure enough neither key will lock or unlock the doors via the driver's side. The doors lock fine with the clicker.

Hi Jim,

When it comes to keyless entry, I'm useless as I've never had such fancy device.

Tech seems to be busy with family, I hope he comes back soon or people will be running all over the place[8D].

I was reading a Volvo dealer's web site in Japan (not a new car dealer but a used car dealer only deals with Volvo), and they too said that the ABS module on 850 was a fiasco, as it is located too close to the engine (heat damage) andthey also mentioned, like I did, that the module was made in Philippines and the quality was questionable. Nothing personal toward Philippines, but when it comes to industrial products, I am probably the most axxl guy on the planet.

Have a good week.
