Auto. tranny replacement

1996 850 sedan. Need to replace auto transmission. Do I need to remove engine also? If so,
should tranny & engine come out as one unit?

Either way. Remove them from the top together or you can get under the car and remove the subrame and pull the tranny by itself.

Thanks. btw, how much clearance would I need to drop tranny down and out
(don't have access to a lift)
