Default Build your own code reader

Just had my car (95 850 T5 with OSB2 plug under coin holder) at the friendly back-street garage (friend of a friend) and he was rather irritated to find that his brand new £4000 OBD/OBD/EOBD etc scanner wont recognise the car.

Anyway I did a bit of digging about on the net and found the following
http://www.volvo-tech.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=113

Will this actually work?

I'm sick of taking it to the stealer as they've had it twice and still not cleared the lambda light/running rich problem and it needs sorted soon as I'm now getting 11mpg around town.

Many thanks,
Iain

You should have diagnostic box under the hood behind the passenger side headlight, because the OBDII port you are referencing is not fully functional. That did not happen until 1996. Refer: http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/c...odesvolvo.html
Hope this helps!!

Thats a bummer, well that other option looks cool. I've heard of people doing this.

Yep it's a real PITA! Was funny seeing Stuart though, he'd just spent £4000 on a new scanner and the first car he uses it on isn't compatible.

Anyways I'm going to get a friend of do it for me, as she's got a soldering iron etc (electrical engineer) so I'll keep you updated.

Either It'll work or I'll be looking for a new ECU.

It works, but only in a limited way. You won't be able to read all the codes as you are only accessing two ports at the most.

My car is 1995 registered but is a 1996 model and only has the OBD11 port as well.
Strange people at Volvo!

According to the forum it'll only allow you to read ECC, Cruise and ECU codes. What other type of codes are there?

Fuel system, Automatic box and ABS/Tracs come to mind.

As they are read on different sockets on the old diagnostic system, I assumed they would be the same on OBD11.

Doh!

Of course - I forgot they'd all be computerised (rather stupid considering it's an auto box), used to helping Dad fiddle with old landrovers.

I don't know what's up with the not-so compliant obd2. I'd quite like to get a proper scanner at some point if it's not too expensive but for the moment it'll do.
