Default buy or not?

I have the opportunity to purchase a 95 850 2.4 sedan with 55000 original miles on it. It has had two owners, older gentlemen who took exceptional care of it. The carfax is clean and the maintenance is right on. I know its coming up on a timing belt, serp and h20 pump and spark plugs. There is no rust on the vehicle and no major damage to the exterior. Just wear and tear. He is asking $3600 and is flexible on price. Low end repairs im estimating about 300 if I do it myself. Upwards of 2k if I go to the dealer. This will be used as a secondary short commuter. Do you guys reccomend I make an offer and do you think coming in at 2000 to start is to low? Any advice tips or input would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Did you read this yet? It's a sticky at top of the page.
https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...thread-13678/?

The only reason that car is worth much at all is the low-mileage and good condition (so you say). But unfortunately it's an N/A, which is fine car, but it's not as desirable to people who know volvo's as the turbo models.

That being said, if you like the car, and you can DIY the maint items, then sure, go for it (after you read the above thread).

BTW: at $3600, that's at least $1000 over-priced. Your location can influence price; where are you?

Thank you for the response. I am in mass. I just went to look at it and it was indeed to good to be true. I had the intention of offering 1500 but the guy started getting argumentative about the condition before we could even talk price. Engine was ticking and was full of corrosion. Thank you again.

Glad you came to your decision. Low mileage Volvos are over rated. When the motors and transmission can last 500,000 when cared for, cosmetics are more expensive than mechanical issues, especially when you can turn a wrench. Find a clean car and fix it.
