Default Can I change my Steering Wheel??? ..

Hi, I just recently purchased a 1994 Volvo 850 GLT Sedan. I have been looking on Ebay at some after market items and I have fallen in love with a sports steering wheel with the Volvo logo on it from Japan.

Name: steeringwheel.jpg
Views: 3165
Size: 32.5 KB

However, as I am new to Volvo and have only ever owned a Daewoo previously. I don't know how or even if I can change the steering wheel of the car. I know I had to purhcase a boss kit for the steering wheel I bought for the Daewoo. But I could do it myself. Only the Volvo has an air bag. Tottally new to air bags and I get a car full of them. OK.. So can it be done. And can I do it myself or do I have to take it to someone who can do it for me??

I just like to make my cars more me and more sporty looking. If my husband has his way he is going to buy a body kit for it as well...

Anyway, hope that someone out there has done this or knows if I can do it!!

Found some selections but they don't seem to have English pages.

http://www.afterparts.co.jp/isotta/isotta_steering.html
This is probably what you saw in the pic. The MFG is called ISOTTA, and the price is approx. US$330.

http://www.afterparts.co.jp/simonira..._steering.html
Not sure if you want to go this crazy. Price ranges from US$200 to $380.

http://www.9999.jp/steering/
Good selection but price exceeds approx. US$1,000 (hand crafted) and that doesn't include shipping to Australia.

http://www.kenzcar.com/parts.asp
Only has onesteering for US$380.

http://www.afterparts.co.jp/vst/vst_volvo_850.html
VST is a Japanese tuner dedicated to Volvo. Couldn't find a steering wheel, though.

http://www.afterparts.co.jp/index.html
If you want some major mods.

Good luck, I'm happy with the factory original as I'm not into mods.

P.S: You really have to be careful with SRS. The negative battery cable has to be disconnected and some components have to be handled very carefully to avoid damage. Also, many aftermarket steering wheels don't seem to come with a room for SRS. Unless the conversion kit comes with good instructions, I would have it done at a shop that does mods often.

In this case, a gentleman by the name of Moderator S70Driver would be your adviser, as he's a mods kind of guy.

Cheers,

Thank you.. I found the one I was looking for:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....:IT&ih=014

It does say it fits.. But who knows.. LOL. And the price is good. I just hope if I buy it, it fits.
I will probably get someone who knows what they are doing to fit it then. LOL.

Thanks again for the info.. I will get a hold of S70Driver if I can..

You might want to check your state laws first.
Because if you get into an accident you might get in big trouble for removing the Air bag.
Some states it is Illegal to remove an air bag from a car like replacing the steering wheel.
Also it might void your insurance for that accident as well.

Yeah I would much rather have a cool looking steering wheel rather than something that would save my life in a collision.

Be real guys, airbags are one of the best things to ever happen to cars. I worked for NHTSA for a while and have seen many crash test results.

Oh, don't get me wrong.. I think air bags are a good invention. But my point for myself only is that I have NEVER had a car with air bags in my whole life.. And if I hadn't had my Deawoo crap itself AGAIN and make me re think fixing it AGAIN then I wouldn't have even bought my Volvo. Which I noticed has air bags in every nook and cranny. LOL

But, since I have never had them and I have never been in a car crash (not saying it wont happen, probably will eventually happen to all of us). Then I may as well just go with out like I always have done. Plus I am keeping all the other air bags so my children and husband are safe. And if anything happens, well, it happens.. You only have a short time on earth in this lifetime, so, until I am reincarnated as some millionaire where I sit in the back of my limo. Then I shall drive my own car in style.. At least........Thats what I would like to do. And I looked into the rules here in Australia.. And it looks like I can change my steering wheel. Will be confirmed later today.. Just need to contact the RTA- Roads and Traffic Authority to make sure.

Well, looks like I will be keeping the original Steering Wheel after all. It is illegal to change it in NSW (Where I live), ACT, SA and WA. However, if I was living in NT or Tasmania I would be able to do it. Don't plan on moving just to be able to change my Steering Wheel. Although, in NT they don't even have speed limits so my Hubbys has now decided to move there with his Mk1 RS2000 Escort. LOL.. I told him he was moving alone..

Thanks for your help and info. I am now going to be working on changing the bits of my car that I can.. Lets start with the aesthetics first and work my way to the engine.. lol

That is a ricy pile of **** steering wheel. Unless you are going to be tracking your car alot, wearing a helmet, and do not care that the other airbags in the car function properly; I would advise to keep your factory wheel.
If you MUST replace the factory wheel, go with a good company such as sparco, momo, or omp.

Here is a picture of my omp wheel in my STi.

OK, correct me if I am wrong, but don't STI (Subaru Technica International) come wth Momo Steering Wheels as standard?
And isn't an STI classified as rice?

^Not the wheel in the picture....They will come /w airbags... For some reason though, the steering wheel looks really big and not like the racing ones.

Btw, I never knew you had an STI whiteout. Got more pics?

Edit: And to answer your question Trina, I wouldn't say an STI is rice. Those things have some major ***** w/ a little tuning...

They come with a different diameter leather momo wheel. My omp is alacantra and soft, meaning that if my face makes out with the rim it will give vs. breaking my face.

An STi is not classified as rice. It is classified as a high performance sedan. Mine will be pushing over 550awhp on 93 once it's current build is complete (was 400awhp when it went down).

Cool... I want one of those!!!! Too bad it costs about USD 10000 more than my 850, but it sure does look great. How much cash did you spend on upgrades to get to 400hwp?

waay too much.

GT35R kit (up pipe, turbo, intake, downpipe), cat back, bigger i/c, fuel injectors, fuel pump, and engine management are all that is needed to run that turbo. There are many other turbo's that will net 400awhp, so it can be done for pretty cheap. My car has about $50k into it, I only buy the best parts and generally go over the top for what is needed. When it was in great shape it would take down 600cc bikes on the highway.
Then a bad tune and a cracked intake manifold blew out a ringland and it has been down since.

Looks sweet. Not sure how I feel about the Wingless STI though...

And it looks like you got a couple sponsors too..

Btw, you need a bigger turbo. A local RX-7 has a turbo where you can fit a pack of cigs in there...
