Considering Purchasing a 97 850-R
My wife and I are looking for a second car. We already own a 97 850GLT and love it. I'm all for adding another 850 to the stable. My wife, she's not to sure... but mostly because she wants something different. Our's currently needs the ABS fixed (who's doesn't at 140k?
) and the A/C needs recharged (after reading some posts, I hope that's all and it's not the evaporator.)
I've read this thread top to bottom: https://volvoforums.com/m_62024/tm.htmso I guess it's on to the car we're considering:
It's a local 850-R(finally! been looking for a year) and here's what the ad says:
It's white, but don't know the interior color, and theasking price is $4000. I thought that seemed reasonable. Given it has all service records and the owner has recently replaced the timing belt, is this worth jumping on? Again, given the service records, the mileage doesn't really scare me... but I don't want another project car. I've got a Typhoon for that.
If this doesn't work for us, we're considering a 1984 244 (upgraded turbo and the price is right)... but I've been dreamingof an 850-R since I first saw one in 1995.
Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I tell you what, if you don't buy it for $4,000 I will. I wouldn't even bother with an inspection. Especially if the interior is black/charcoal. Mine has more miles than that and I would not sell it for less than $6,000. It's a very hard car to find. Not as hard as yellow T5R, but pretty hard to find. There is a guy on here named Robert that I have not seen for a while and he had a hard time finding white with tan interior in a 97 850 R also. The R's are getting harder and harder to find.
I'll make sure to show my wife this post tonight. [sm=smiley20.gif]
Pending what the bank says tomorrow (for some reason, you have to have money to buy things), and it shouldn't be a problem,I'd love to go pick it up this weekend. From the one pic in the ad, I would guess charcoal interior, but it's a small pic and hard to tell.
We'll see what happens!

Jim, do you mean there are those out there who smash these cars? I hope they are simply hiding themin their garages for TLCing, otherwise.....
Death Penalty for them[8D].
92Typhoon,

I think they'll probably say something like "Hello Sir, how may we help you?"........[8D].

My, you must be kidding.
Cheers All,

I haven't spent much time here on the Volvo forums, mostly because our's hasn't had any problems. I spend most of my time on the Syclone/Typhoon Forums... that being said, it's nice to know there's people as passionate about Volvo's as there are about Syclones and Typhoons. [sm=smiley20.gif]
I'll keep you updated on my quest for an 850-R.

For your ABS problem, send this in and he will repair it for much less than what the dealer will ask.

Btw, is a syclone/Typhoon a motorbike?

They were factory rated, basically, at 285hp and 350lb-ft of torque, though as always, those numbers have been fudged a bit and we think it was closer to 310hp and 410lb-ft give or take.
A well tuned, stock Syclone could do 0-60 in 4.3-4.9 seconds. A Typhoon 0-60 in about 5.3. 1/4 mile times are low 13's for the Syclone and mid/high 13's to low 14's for the Typhoon (depending, again, on tune of the truck.)
For more info, you can check out a site I admin: http://www.syty.orgI apologize for the gaps in info, I'm still filling in the holes. Our forums are http://www.syty.net
And here's my baby: 1992 GMC Typhoon #2482 out of 2500.

And thanks for the link to the ABS. I always have a hard time finding that page. If we get another car, it's a good excuse to get it done on our GLT.
Sorry for the long post, but I love my Typhoon. haha.
Sweet ride!!!!
If you buy the R with a little tuning it might run with the Typhoon!!
Here is a pretty good link to a fast Volvo 940. It is my Buddies car.
It is running low 13's without NOS.

Here he ran a 13.6

Hm.......That's actually really cool.
I see the gauge pods hiding in there.
Are is the body stock? Because the performance hood on there looks pretty cool.
You just need some bigger rims and this car would look really cool.

Yup. It's all stock (body and rims) except for the hood. It's been painted by the previous owner, but basically stock color scheme.
Not to get too far off topic, but here's a few others:

That was from Syclone Typhoon Nationals in Kansas City last Sept. We had 39 trucks show up.
And here's a friend of mine's Syclone... .Definitly NOT Stock. haha.

Oddfire Twin Turbo V6. Don't know the Dyno numbers. At Nationals, with a poor tune (he has just installed the FAST system), missing and popping all the way down the track, he went 10.003... All Wheel Drive.
Current world's fastest AWD Syclone from Sweden. Over there it ran a 8.95 at 153. At Nationals, he could only run a 9.14 before getting kicked off the track (failed to pass NHRA tech.)

And the, I believe, 90 Series turbo (don't quote me on that. All i know is that it will suck up small children.)

You can see more of my Syclone Typhoon pictures here: http://www.nadgraph.com/gallery/index.php?list=4
I can post more links to vids and pics if people are interested. They are very akin to Volvos, being turbo'd and brick-like in shape.
Makes me want the 850-R even more.

My Typhoon is the reason we bought our Volvo. Since owning it, I have decided every car I own will be turbocharged. haha.
Now, I just need to get an 850-R and life will be grander.

Sounds like you're more than half way there. You got the wife interested. My wife loves the fact we have three Volvo's cause she always has a choice of which one to drive. I take the one I feel like driving when I leave and she gets one of the other two. The white 850 R is the favorite for both of us though, but I think the yellow T5R is the best running of the three. I'm actually thinking about taking it to the track to see what it will do.
I would sell the 98 V70 if I could find some Turbo model with a five speed, but it has to be a wagon. I would really like a 98 V70 T5 five speed in Red with charcoal interior. I'm not even sure they make that. I know they do the S70 T5 five speed, but not sure about the V70.

Shhhhhh..... I found it! Don't tell anyone. 1996... Red... Charcoal interior... appear to be 18" rims.... It's quite a bit further away, but I think it'll be worth the drive from the pics the owner sent me.
But like I said... shhhh, don't tell anyone, I don't want to jinx it.

This is your car.

Edit: It's not an R, but it's a very very fair price. $4500.
Double Edit: Looks like you found a car yourself. Definetely let us know if you buy it.
But the main differences between the R is the ECU (which gives it 240 hp, but you can buy a chip which will up the boost), Rims, and the front bumper has foglight holes.
Triple Edit:
Here's a wagon in CO so it's around you..
