Default Damn, still leaking oil...

Ok after fixing turbo oil return line and tighting up hoses and such. Im STILL getting oil leaking. Looks likes coming from oil cooler line and somewhere near middle of engine.

I have never been to a dealership before, we have mechanic in the family but he is doing bad physically so i dont want to worry him with problems. So if i went to dealership for oil leak, if they fixed something that they thought was the problem but leaking continued would they fix something else they thought was leaking again for free or would i end up paying for another thing. Could they fix or replace all hoses and such?

I dont know very much about dealerships so any information would be helpfull, how do they work?i just want the problem solved the fastest way possible, my driveway is looking bad.

Volvo Dealers are pretty expensive...

I think around here, labor is 110 per hour while the average is something like 70-80.

I'm pretty sure they'd make you pay for EVERYTHING unless they are feeling good and do something free out of the goodness of their heart...

Try to locate an independant Volvo mechanic if you can...
Or even call your local dealer and askt hem how much labor is...

Hello Matt,

Greetings from Yokohama.

If you're mechianically inclined, you might want to attack the problem by yourself. If you aren't, try locating an independent shop that specialises in Swedish/European makes, as RedTurbo has noted. 850s are noted for oil leak from the oil cooler lines.Try cleaning the leak and see if you can locate the problem. Here are some of the leak-favourite locations:

1. Oil cooler returnhose (pax-side, on the bottom of the oil cooler). The hose is noted for leak from the seam between the hose section & metal tube. If the leak is from the connection between the hose & the oil cooler, you only need to replace O-ring x1, seal ring x1, & metal clamp(or you can put a band-type clamp around the original clamp).

2. Oil thermostat housing-to-engine block (the unit that is located on thr right of the crank pulley). You need a new seal ring but this procedure is a PITA. If you don't like working on cars, have it done by a professional.

3. Incorrect oil filter installation.

4. Leaky oil pan gasket.

5. Leaky oil filler cap gasket.

6. Leaky oil level dipstick O-ring.

Again, locating the leak is half the battle. After that, you can tell a dealer/shop exactly what needs to be done.

Good luck,

JPN

Where can i find the o-ring and seal rings? I replaced the oil cap seal, we had oil in spark plugs and all over top of engine. Is there a size for the o-rings that i would need?

Hi Matt,

The O-ring & seal ring are inside the connection between the oil cooler line and the oil cooler (where the line connects to oil cooler, the one that's closest to the engine, in front of the radiator). You have to remove the metal clamp first (snap ring pliers come in very handy) and pull it off. You could perhaps try cheap aftermarket o-rings, but the seal ring may be difficult to find.I got both of them from FCP Groton.

If you see oil all over the head, it may have been the filler gasket, which you've already replaced. Another source is the dipstick O-ring.

Keep us updated.
