the last one seemed to me to be the cause and effect of what is now happening. upon removal of the pcv and all connecting lines (what was left of them) they were totally blocked with sand and oil and the smaller fitting at the top right of the sensor was burnt shut with oil.

i didnt get photos of the valves being done - i got so into the work i forgot and i wasnt about to take it all apart again to get pics -- anyway its all fine and clean now - strange how 1 small item can cause so much trouble - all because of the stupid pcv valve and supporting hoses bein blocked - take a bit of advice people -IT PAYS TO CHECK THE PCV SYSTEM OCCASIONALLYAND CHECK ALL YOUR SMALL VACUUM LINES ON A REGULAR BASIS!!

Totally agree the flame trap should be removed and cleaned every oil change.

I'm wondering how that sandy burnt oil crap gets in there to begin. My oil pan was full of it.

BTW radio16 why not pull the bock, measure the cylinders, hone, install new rings, measure the ring end gap, measure the pistons, if you are going this far? maybe go all the way?

Default Dead volvo?? I think not

i would but i have no means to do so- no lift- no tree - no chain - no help- from what i've done so far i honestly think the pistons are fine and so are the rings i did an inspection from the bottom of the car oil pan off it was full of crap(there was a magnet glued to the bottom of the pan- but funny enough no sand (well a tiny bit). it looks as though the cylinders were honed not to long ago i still see the marks-XXXXX pattern looks fresh- if they had been original you wouldnt have seen any marks would you? the timing belt and water pump are new too -not my doing . the rings seem fine - i poured oil into each cylinder and left it sit over night and there was no loss of oil at all - not discernable anyway. when i hand cranked the engine to set the timing marks i listened for any kind of strange noises and there was nothing --smooth as silk musta cranked it round 3 times kept missing mark- lol kind of hard to do alone-any advice on anything will be greatly appreciated. next step is re-construction- i did a cold assembly today without gaskets- and it looks good. BTW there is no "flame trap" on an 850 turbo Bobec, sorry to tell ya bro- i would assume it got nasty because someone ran it with out an air filter and it also has no thermostat but i will fix that
DONT BE LAZY NEVER RUN CAR WITHOUT THERMOSTAT OR AIR FILTER - UNLESS YOU LOVE TO WASTE HARD EARNED CASH!!

yes there is. it's the PCV system. different places call it different things. flame trap=pcv system

Nope... the Turbo cars don't have a separate flame trap like the N/A cars do. N/A cars have both a flame trap and an oil trap. Your car has just the oil trap

Put another way: on cars that have them, the flame trap is PART of the PCV system, but isn't the whole thing. It's a common source of confusion.

Well maybe that's not that technical term, but I've seen it called flame traps all the time on sites, mostly little sites, but I've seen it called the flame trap for 800 series.

Yes... the NA 850s all have a flame trap. Its purpose is to prevent flames from any backfire from reaching- and igniting- the hot crankcase gases that the PCV system is recirculating back into the engine through the PCV port located right by the throttle body on NA cars. Turbo cars have the PCV port on the intake side of the turbocharger, so any backfire would have to travel backwards through the throttle body, intercooler and associated plumbing, backwards through the turbo, then into the PCV tube where it connects to the hose between the turbo and air filter box. This is physically impossible, hence there is no need for a flame trap on turbocharged Volvos.

And yes, I've heard people call the PCV system the "flame trap." However, this leads to confusion for owners of NA cars, causing them to think that when they actually need the PCV system replaced that all they need is to change the flame trap, which is a tiny disk of plastic that costs $.50, rather than the whole PCV system. This is why you shouldn't call the PCV system the flame trap. The flame trap is a part of the PCV system on NA cars.
