Disgnosing an electrical problem. Help please!
The backlight on the LCD screen under the speedo on my 1996 850 GLT went out some time ago. What could've caused this? I know Volvos have problems with electrical systems, but is it something that can easily be fixed? Something with fuses? I'm not much of the mechanical type, but is there anything I can do? Thanks!

Hi,
See attached pic, it shows you the back of the cluster assembly. I marked the LCD bulbs, which seem to be available only at the dealer, but take the bulb out and bring it to places like Radio Shack to see if they have compatible bulbs. Don't worry about the wattage, a few watt difference wouldn't hurt but go with higher wattage bulb to make the LCD brighter. If you can find the exact wattage bulbs, however, go with them. The pic I attached is of VDO (German) cluster, and 850s have another clusters made by Yasaki (Japanese). They're basically the same unit but Yasaki may have different back light for the LCD.
An instruction to taking the cluster assembly out:
http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850gearinstructions.htm
You will need some Torx bits; they are available at Sears Craftsman within affordable prices.
I hope this helps. Also, try tapping the top of the dash to see if the bulbs light up.
Good luck,
JPN

Hi Jimmy,
I actually gave you the URLs while you were at the fuel pump[8D]. But here it is:
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/volvo_wo...techdocs.shtml
I didn't really advertise this to anyone, as the manuals are a courtesy of Volvo, and if people started using them all over the place without deleting them within a short period of time, someone from Volvo may have noticed and they may have tried to stop us[8D]. I've been deleting the manuals I posted within a few days (usually 7 days), rather than leaving them floating around.
Also, note that the manuals don't seem to have all pages, and are definitely missing some vital info. Well, what can you expect for free? However, they are great supplement for Haynes. I've been printing them out from PDF format and then scanning them into jpeg format so I can attach to my posts. This is a time & ink consuming process but as long as it helps people; here's my favourite adage:
"It doesn't cost anything to be nice".

I actually bookmarked the page after you gave it to me since it's so helpful. That site is a great find.

Hi Jimmy,
You may be able to find a full version of the manuals, if you become a member of the site (U.K). If I still had 850, I would've become a member to get full access, or buy factory manual (which I believe are the same) from the following vendor:
https://www.volvotechinfo.com/index.cfm?event=shop.cart
Well, if I can come back to North America in the near future, I'll buy a car & factory manuals, as aftermarket manuals are lacking many info and are not sufficient for my use.

Hello JPN and others,
Sylvania lists the type 2721 as a general replacement for the
indicator and instrument lights in the 850. These are available
at the auto parts chains for $2.50-$3.00 for a pack of 2.
The only problem is that you need to solder wire leads to the
pins in some cases. They are a 1.2W bulb I think.
There are a few versions of this lamp with plastic bases
that may be a drop in replacement for the Volvo lamps.
The 2721 MF/JF looks interesting but my local auto parts
chain did not stock these so I could not try them.
You can look at the various versions here:
http://www.sylvaniaautocatalog.com/n...nia/Search.asp
(Just enter 2721 in the search box)
I used one of the 2721 bulbs for my gearshift indicator
(after soldering on wire leads and mounting in the plastic base).
The bulb looks identical to the original Volvo bulb and seems
to work fine.
I'm really short on time this morning, best regards.
