Default ECU question

So I am just curious....would I have any issues running a 1996 850R ecu in a 1994 850 turbo?

94=EGR
96=SAS
=CEL=fail emissions (if you have it)

I don't think Indiana has Emissions inspections for pre-96 cars, does it?

Indiana doesnt have emissions testing at all. I just dont want a cel on all the time. it was worth a shot, anyway. I was hoping I could put in a 96 ecu and do an egr delete.

That EGR still not working right, no? You could try this Egr Delete 95 850 T5 - Volvospeed Forums.

You could also pay someone to re-program the ECU. What is that these days $75 - $ 100?

I am not sure, was the SAS (Air Pump) in all 850?

Simply putting in a 96 ecu and doing an EGR delete wouldn't get rid of the CEL.

96-97 had SAS.

Henry: nobody is gonna reflash an ECU to delete emissions stuff. it's illegal.

Yeah, I know, although some people might argue that how does Indiana enforce its laws if it does not Test, like California for example? Indiana is basically saying "screw the EPA". I don't think that is by chance.

Following the letter of law, even air filters cannot be modified. I would like to see how EPA enforces its laws with the multi-billion dollar industry of aftermarket/mods parts, car tuning, etc.... Heck, even Ebay should be shut down too, since most of the parts are not EPA-certified, or self-certified.

OTOH, my comment was more on the practical side -- if I / you obtain another ECU for you car, the ECU needs to be re-programmed to match the VIN, at least, besides that it should incorporate the new systems, and not illuminate the CEL. That is at least healthy for the car.

Henry: they get around it by saying its "for off road use only"

I agree that it's silly that they cant legally reflash to get rid of EGR or air pump. I was only thinking of having the R ecu on hand to run in the winter time after i get my tune done on the stock ECU. There's absolutely no need to run 300+ hp on a car in northern Indiana in the winter. I may just find one from a 1994 and use that instead.

Yeah, I know. I remember when EPA went after Casper Electronics, years ago, and even though chips were labeled "Off-Road Use only" Casper was still found guilty, and had to pay a "hefty" fine of few thousand bucks, because it could not afford to, LOL!!!!

EPA is running for cover these days with Republicans after them for these over-the-top regulations.

About the ECU: I thought it was going in as permanent. So when you go for Safety, don't they plug into the OBD port? Or you don't even have a Safety Inspection?

Here in NY, we have Emissions + Safety every year, so my ECU has to match the VIN, at least.

we have no inspections whatsoever in most of the state. There are 2 (i believe) counties that are essentially suburbs of Chicago that do emissions testing, but that's it.
