ECU upgrade
Hey guys, i'm looking at purchasing an R 628 ecu once i get some cash after i fix or replace, well no replace my turbo and i was wondering will it be okay going from a 1994 850 turbo to this new 97 R ecu?
I'm going to be putting in a 16t turbo and will not to changing anything like exhaust, i've done all the vacuum lines, have new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc oil, tranny fluid, can i put this ecu in with expected power gain and no damage, please provide what imput you have, thanks!!

Look at the info on http://www.ipdusa.com under the 850 ECu upgrade section.
Watch the video as well.
Its essentially if you want to go further with modding your 850.

my turbo, doesn't spool up like it did, hardly crosses white zone, had the wastegate fix as it broke, now it blows oil out the exhuast after i let off the throttle, i have 229,000 kilometers so not a ton of miles, but my volvo mechanic says its done, i'm buying a turbo tomorrow probably from volvospeed for 238 US with shipping with 91,000 miles on it, so it better than what i have plus its the slight upgrade 16T, but yeah i don't want huge performance right now, i want to keep my license but having a R clone would be alright, engine wise, but yeah thats why, thanks, car never used to blow oil and has nooo power like it used to.

yeah thats great, that's what i've read, looking for that, i was offered an S60 turbo with low low miles, 42000, needs to have the oil lines swapped but will be ready in a week, i've only put on 10,000kms in a year, so in about ten years ill be done with the turbo, but what do you guys think, $238 shipped for the 91k or $318 for the 42k will the 91k handle the new R ecu, i think so i mean its 16T? or would you go with the s60 low mileage one, i'm just worried about finances since i'm already doing more than i need to and can, but yeah opinions?? lol thanks

238 shipped is a pretty good deal. I don't think the extra 50K miles is going to make a difference especially in the long run since my turbo has 214,xxx miles on it and it's practically brand new yet. I would take the 16T, a 15G and a 16T would be able to handle the R ECU (16T more efficiently though). I don't know if you know what kind of S60 the turbo is coming off of, but it could be a 13G, which would not be able to handle an R tune.

Hmm okay, thats what i though and yeah i don't want a 13g turbo.. thats a downgrade and a half lol but k good to know i think i'm going with the cheaper option and the 16T sounds good, will get on it asap.
This one guy on volvospeed pm'd me and said he'd "burn me a 97 R ecu for 80" plus shipping and has a whole thread on their tuning method and how they can cut out sas and tune ecu's for even beyond 16T volvo's.
Should i try to still get this original R ecu or go with this other option depending on how it works? thanks again

I know there is a guy on there that is trying that now. I have read that he is trying alot of new things on the 850 ECU's. I know he also does alot of 740 and 940 ECU's as well.
If you try him let us know as I need to have one done myself soon on my car since I have done alot of upgrades and still running a stock ECU at the moment.

It is tryingbe, ? i got this email which i will paste below, is there something i should be worried about, or you just know of him whats why you knew his name.
"You would basically get a 96 R ECU, ready to be drop in. The case is 94-96 turbo ECU, but the board is socketed and a chip with 96 R ECU software is in there. No EGR nor SAS, if you still have EGR, you'll have to get both ports plugged up at the intake and exhaust manifold"
Can anyone give me a detailed diagram or write up how to plugged my EGR at the exhaust and intake manifold, pictures if you have?? because i'm not sure exactly, and does that sound like a good idea let me know thanks

He's cool, I went to him when I was looking for a straight housing for my turbo, he knows his turbos and ECU's, that's why I just figured it was him.
I'm going to contact him to see if he has any more of those.
What is the EGR? If your car doesn't have then mine won't either since we have the same car. Isn't SAS the Secondary Air Source? Because I know that my car doesn't have that.

Yes we do not have SAS but EGR is part of the vacuum system no? Its like exhaust gas regulator or something, i'm not sure but its for the emission system but i'm not sure if that woudl help for power but trip the lambda lights for the system or maybe not? ill ask if i can have it with or maybe or ask him for a diagram to block them off as i only one where a couple ports are. :P

Where on the exhaust manifold is that? I just don't remember seeing either of those "valves" when I did the PCV or the turbo. Maybe I didn't see them because I wasn't looking for them. Do you need something special to plug them with or does anything work?
And just for reference, what does the EGR do? If I went through with this, I would like to know what it is that I'm blocking and what it does.
