Default Engine swap on a 1997

A while back I bought a 1997 850 (not turbo) that needed a replacement engine. After a lot of searching I found one with only 62k miles on it. When my mechanic started to work on the car, he told me that the engine I was sold (represented to me as having come off another 1997 850) was not the right engine for my vehicle. He said the engine in my vehicle has an EGR. I called the place where I bought the replacement from, & they assured me it was the same engine.

Long story short, I ran the VIN on the replacement engine, and it's from a 1995 850, manual tranny; mine is automatic (don't know if that makes a difference). From what I found out talking to a mechanic at a Volvo dealership, the 97 has an EGR, and the 95 doesn't, so they can't be retrofitted. Can someone explain?

Thank you.

So much false information. Transmissions doesn't matter. 94-95 has EGR, 96-97 has SAS. There's a gray period in 95/96. You can swap over the emissions parts from the engines on to the other one. The block itself is the exact same. Swap the SAS parts from your 97 onto the 95 block. Done.

i swapped a 1997 850 motor in to a 1995 850 and now im driving around fine but you do have to switch them and rewire the EGR and the speed senor is in a different place so he will have to find the wires and reroute them to the computer
hope this helps

He did it the hard way then. 93-95 have a speed sensor on the backside of the transmission that they used for the speedometer. 96-97 use the ABS sensor for the speedometer. If you have a 93/95 car and put in a transmission that doesn't have the speed sensor, all you have to do is splice into the front driver ABS sensor on the hub with the speed sensor wires.

Or you could keep the factory sensors and just swap transmissions from one engine to the next.

Merry Christmas to you too! No, it is in central New York. But there is a place called Erie Vovo here in NY that does nothing but Volvo replacement parts, and they ship. They have a sister store in TN that does as well, they are called Southern Vovo. You can google them I wish I knew about them before I bought this engine. They will guarantee the used engine for 6 months, and will ship it to where ever you want.
