Talking Epic junk yard win today

So me and a buddy went to the junk yard today - he was looking for parts for his saab 9000 and i was going along to help pull whatever he needed, and to check the yard for new volvos.

No new volvos, but we DID find a 1995 Saab 9000 Aero there with 78k miles on it. he got the door inserts, another friend came out and grabbed the direct ignition, and I grabbed the turbo.

Everything I have found about the smoking on my car points to the turbo, so i was not really looking forward to rebuilding mine or buying a new one.

This turbo i got off this car is a TD04HL 15T, which im pretty sure is an exact match for what comes stock on the 855T. There is NO shaft play in this turbo and it spins freely and easily. Also, the impellar blades look to be perfect.

Why this is an epic win instead of just a win is because the chick at the counter at the junk yard didnt know what part it was (how the heck does that happen?) so i told her it was an air pump. I got it for $7.99

Never heard of a Volvo using a 15T. A 15g yes for the 850 models. And a 16T yes for the 70 series models. But never a 15T.

How are Saabs? The older ones.. not so much the GM ones.. I like the early 2000's wagons. I wonder how Saab is even going to do in the future

Okay. what's the difference then? I know that there's a 15T on my car now - or according to the paperwork for the replacement turbo, its a 15t...

Still not sure if this turbo i got will be a direct bolt in or not, or if I'll even be able to get it to work. Anyone have any ideas on that?

The 15g has a flat back compressor wheel and the 15t has a super back compressor wheel. Other than that I think they are exactly the same. see the link below for a description.

So, after I stopped laughing my head off, I guess it is an air pump in a way. LOL

SAAB is done, One of my friends owns a Saab dealership and he recommends not buying one because parts are already scarce from the manufacturer.
GM put it up for sale with no bidding
I liked the mid 2000 9-5s
which were essentially Opels

Nice find on the turbo, I hope it works on your car!

thanks for the answer, Kocky. I'm just hoping that everything bolts up in relatively the same places. Oil lines I'm not worried about, as I can get braided lines with ends on them, made if need be. I just hope it bolts to the piping the same.

So an update: I took the heat shield off my car today and got a look at the turbo. The bolts that go to the exhaust manifold look as if they will line up perfectly, as do the ones that go to the downpipe. The oil and coolant lines dont appear to be any major issue either - they should be pretty close to fitting. If i run into any issues, I can always get braided lines made for it.

However: it appears that this turbo has the intake side oriented about 90 degrees off of where I need it to be. I know that the whole turbo assembly is held together by a band clamp in the middle that joins the exhaust side and intake side, but what I need to know is if it's okay to just loosen that clamp and rotate the whole intake side the 90 degrees i need to make everything line up.

Oh, also, the wastegate bolts are completely different - gonna have to fab up a bracket for that, I think.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to do this?

My suggestion would be to sell or trad that turbo for the one you really need. Use the $$$ you get as a down payment towards the one you want.

well with the exception of it being clocked wrong, it IS the turbo i want for right now. I'm definitely not in a position where i can go soend money on a turbo right now, and the turbo thats in the car right now is going out.
