Exhaust
I have a 96 850 GLT I have many questions about my 850...For some reason my exhaust is rather loud...and the check engine is always being lit up...Does these two have any significance together...I really don't mind about the exhaust noise...To be truthful I like it a lot..It's just my dad that's not so fond of it and Both me and my dad don't like seeing the "check engine" light up....It gets us worried that the car might die without notice...I've had my dad take it to some shops and get numerous things fixed...we've spent over about 400 fixing the car...Any help is appreciated....THanks
check engine lights are designed specifically to pertain to emission related issues...if you have a problem with your catalytic convertor, or a pipe around it, it could cause the CEL and the noise...any exhaust shop should be able to diagnose the issue.
I have a 94 850 Turbo with 203,000 miles and never changed anything on the exhaust. It's kind of loud, but not that bad. I have had it checked recently and they tell me everything is fine. My CEL is on all the time. I just started ignoring it. I got tired of paying to replace sensors when there was nothing wrong with the car other than a bad sensor. I bought the car practically new (9,800 miles) and the light has been on more than off. I wish I knew how to turn it off. I tried just diconnecting the battery, but it did not go out and then I had to put the code in to get the stereo to work, reprogram all the radio buttons and reset the clock. And the light did not go out.
The light can come on from the gas cap loose to a pin hole in a vaccum line.It could be about 100 diffrent things that turn the light on.If you can get the codes pulled and let me know I will try to help you through it.
The 850 Exhaust is normally pretty loud.

Yo Bouncer,
I've got a 850 and made the mistake of replacing both o2 sensors after having pulled the code. 9 times out of 10 it's not the sensors, but a small vacuum hose below the left front (facing the car) side of the intake manifold. It's a couple dollar part (little 90 degree elbow) and a hour or two to replace it. It's very hard to see. Check out Bay 13, I'm pretty sure there's a write up about it there. Good luck.
