How hard is it to replace the fuel pump on a '95 850 Wagon?
Is there a access panel in the floor? Do I have to drop the gas tank?

The car wont start, drop 11 miles this morning, ideled for 15 mins, idle was rough, shut it off. Came back 10 min later wouldnt start, towed home.
Fired right up. Shut it back off replaced fuel filter now wont run. Spray carb cleaner into t-body and it will run until all the carb cleaner is gone.
I am 95% sure it is the fuel pump, what do you guys think?

 

Ok, so been doing some searching on here and other places...this car has TWO fuel pumps? Is that correct? A low PSI in the gas tank and high PSI one in the fuel line?
It is a turbo wagon if that makes any difference.

 

There is only one pump. You access from inside the car. Remove the floor panels and on the passenger side behind the rear seat you will see a round panel with I think it is 5 screws. The pump is under the cover. You will have to unplug it and remove the 2 lines to get it out.

I will remove the pump tommorrow, I found a used one locally for $40, I have found the brand new one already recommended from a search on hereon of e-bay for $80 shipped.
Might buy the used one to get the car back on the road and then buy the new one and have it on stand by.

Having a backup pump is not a bad idea. Replacing the fuel pump relay would make it better.

OK, removed the old fuel pump. My wife checked out both the Chiltons and Haynes repair manuals, the Chiltons manual says to peel back the floor and go though the access hatch, the Haynes manual says to drop the gas tank, two reputable manuals two diffrent instructions, weird.
Removed the third seat, opened the floor, unplugged the pump, screw driver and a hammer toloosen the collar, unclamped the hoses, marked the pump fittings just in case.
Found laying in the little cup that the fuel pump sits in plastic shavings, about 3-4 inches long and 5-6 of them, fished them out of course, the bottom of the pump has one of the shavings still attached to it.
I will buy the newused tommorrow after work, install it and see what happens.
I will let you guys know how it goes.

 

Those plastic shavings are not normal.

Rather than newused which you have no idea about its condition you might want to consider replacing the pump motor with a Walbro. The kits only cost around $65.00 or $75.00 online. I have only heard of one of them failing after it was installed and I think that guy screwed up the installation.

Yeah I know those shavings arent normal, I should take a pic and post it.
I have to buy the used one for two reasons, one, we need the car back on the road yesterday, two, money. A used one is half the price of a new one off of e-bay and I can pick it up on my way home with the work van.
I am not supposed to bring the van home but being down to only one car...the kids still need to get to school.
I am gong to buy a new pump in a month or two and have it on hand so that when the used one fails then I can replace it with the new one.

 

Ok, it is all done. Called to get the used fuel pump yesterday but it was still in the car, so they pulled it for me and I picked it up today.
Got home from work, installed the fuel pump, checked for leaks, put the car back together and it is all good now.
Runs even better than before.

When I put the new fuel pump in I will also replace the fuel pump relay.

Considering how careful you do your job, paying attention to details, you would be a great technician be it Volvo or aircraft.
