Gas mileage is to high, what could be wrong?

Hi, I just bought my first car last week.
It´s a Volvo 850 GLE (automatic) from 1993 and has 120.000 miles on it.
The car is in very good shape looks vise. It drives very well and has no rust. The car is a little slow in accelerations and it seems it has a small hole in the muffler (smal patch work there).
But the biggest problem is that it´s burning though all my fuel [>:]
From the first readings, it´s fuel consumption is around 12 mpg (19 liters per 100km). From what I have read on the internet and from other Volvo owners it´s consumption should be more like 18-19 mpg (City).
I have absolute NO knowlage about engines and that stuff, so I wouldn´t know it the spark plugs are damaged or anything like that.
What I can confirm is that I have not noticed any fuel leaking. The engin seems to be running well (in neutral it´s rather steady at abour 900rpm).
My right foot is very economical (start gradually and try not to hit red lights).
Does anybody know what could be wrong here?

If you haven't had it tuned up, or don't know the last time it was tuned up, I would start with a STAGE ZERO tune up. It can be found here: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/The-V...To-t21017.html Your mileage should improve after you do this.

Thanks for all the replies,
I´ve been really busy so I haven´t gotten the chance to reply or check out the car![Frown](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif)
None at the moment [&:] Mainly because I´ve been very busy. But I have scheduled a time with a local machanical shop to take the car in a thougrough check and see what is causing the high mileage.
Thanks for the link. Man, I wish I has some knowlage on these thing so I could do some checks myself ![Smile](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
The car seems to be wasting the same 12mpg every time I fill it with gas (about every 60 miles).

What kind of maintenance have you done recently?
